Default I need some Hardware PC-Building Help

Okay, I'm thinking of setting up a new computer together and I honestly am not up to date with today's hardware (I'm starting to skim through) so I wanted everyone to try and help me build a decent computer.

First of all I don't want anything too expensive, I don't have a set price but, please try not to go overboard. I don't need a computer that out-specs every game by 2 years, just something that will let me play all the games in the market so far and last me for some years.

    Any tips?

    Thanks

If you don't want to outspec anything for two years and save some money I'd advice you'd go for AMD

Their new processors (Phenom II) are more than decent enough to last you years to come and pretty low budget compared to some intel processors

They also got DDR3 motherboards now, again, not nearly as expensive as what you would have to pay for a i7 one

Not bashing intel, their stuff WILL outspec anything that comes out the next couple of years but what's the point.

At any rate it comes down to your preferences, check it out and its up to you

Here's a couple of good hardware sites for you (Portuguese :3)

    Enjoy!

    intel core 2 duo e8400
4gb 800hz(+) ddr2 ram (from a decent brand, like ocz or corsair)
500gb hdd (unless you download ALOT)
    nvidia 9800gt/ati 4870
How much would that go for?

To be honest. I Recommend you go With AMD rather than Intel. They'll save you a ton on your pocket. Just my opinion. a CPU Will not make or a break your FPS to be honest, as long as its a current CPU and not a old gen (IE Single core, P4's, and so forth), its mostly your GPU that will pump out most of the FPS work.

I would recommend you aim for

GPU-A GTX 250/260, or 9800GTX- This can range from 100-150 USD on newegg.
Possibly in SLI if you want to be future proof, and you're using a huge monitor
    CPU-AMD 5400- 6000x2. This can range from 54 USD to 70 USD.

PSU- 500 Watt PSU- about 40-50 USD

320GB HDD- 50 Usd. Depends on how much you'll be using. I have a 1 TB and ive barely used 150 gigs of it.

2 Gigs of 800mhz-1033 Mhz DDR2 Ram. Double the amount if you're using vista. or the upcomming Windows 7 Ram will run you about 30 USD.

and a decent motherboard that can support the next gen cpu's and ram to be future proof.

This is similar to my current rig, if you want to be future proof, it really depends on your monitor bro.

anything above a 22" you're going to need a SLI. Im currently sitting on a 19" HD LCD, too lazy to upgrade. But I run everything i throw at my PC without a problem.

    cpu -165usd
    hdd -60usd
    ram -45usd

    9800gt -130usd
    4870 -220usd

9800gt total (above parts exlcuding the 4870): 400usd
4570 total (above parts exlcuding the 9800gt): 490usd

keep in mind you will need a motherboard, case and powersupply unit with it
although you can reuse your case, but i doubt you can reuse your mobo and psu

@corasked i agree with you although he doesnt ask for a hardcore gaming rig, i think he should have somewhat a decent cpu (note: i dont say amd isnt one)

as for amd recommendation, i wouldnt settle for less then a 6000+

my friend went to get a 6000+ as a site said they sold it for 70eur
so he went to the store and it costed 150eur

so, astro, the decision is up to you to pick one as you have given us a sandbox to play with
look up reviews and benchmarks and post what you would like to have

Yeah he will need a decent cpu. But when it comes to Money Over performance, he should go with AMD. Anything above 2.8 Ghz in their architecture is a great chip to game with currently. But i still recommend he should get a future proof AM2+ MB for future upgrading, if he plans on not upgrading for 2 years. Which will be hard because better, faster gear is always coming out.
But most of the details we've given him can last him for a while, atleast not to upgrade at every new bit of things coming out, As ive said. it really depends on his monitor also. anything above a 22" hes going to need a better graphics card decision

He's talking about the parts total price with the said card.

The new AMD processors are around 165/200ish Euros and totally **** ***

    I'd so go for em.

seconded and i guess we'll wait what astro says

i think he has gotten enough arguments on our side to decide now

Once again, its Performance over wallet.

Such cards are for people into graphics design and Such for business, they need the power to do things to fit their work schedule.

In this case, such a CPU would really benefit that. But right now hes just gaming, so buying that would be completely worthless if hes not going to utilize the CPU true potential. It would be wise to have a future proof Mother-board to support it however. The AMD Anthon 64 x2 series is still keen for gaming right now to be honest.

Thank you all for all those tips and prices. I'm currently studying multiple points of view and I'll get into details in some hours.

I've one or two questions tough:

    - Getting a Graphics card with 512Mb instead of 1Gb is going to have a great impact later on right?

    - I'll probably end up with vista, so I should aim for at least 4Gb ram right?

You should be fine with 512MB gpu mem unless you play high res(1920x1200 and up). As said before, aim for 4GB+ if you're going Vista.
