I would usually agree in a case like this but she stated that she couldn't find the time to read it. I don't have kids and when I was going school and working I could hardly find time to game let alone read. Hell I'm just working now and it's hard to find time to game or do any hobby. Besides not all of these cases are false. I don't see why she would want to sue over such a dull story anyway. She could have picked a better more interesting story that made more money if she wanted to.

You don't need to write a little c in a circle to copyright something. It's yours purely by the fact that it's yours. If you've got it written down and it can be dated (as is says in the article that it was written, submitted and marked in secondary school) then it does fall under copyright law.

I had a debate with a certain member once, he thought copyright laws didn't exist simply because he thought it was dumb to "own" property and ideas.

The part about little to no previous writing experience doesn't really come as a shock though. From what I've gathered having read an excerpt, these books are nothing but run-of-the-mill erotic stories you'd expect comming from some site's fanfic-section.

Nah, that's my whole point. You don't have to register and pay for something to be your own work. Making it official is a good idea if you think somebody might steal it, but doing something as simple as posting a copy for yourself and keeping it sealed in a time-stamped envelope works well enough.

If someone else wrote the books, or wrote something very similar, then it's her work. It doesn't matter if she registered for copyright or not, because she wrote it.

She might not be in the most desirable position leagaly, but she's got a damn good argument.

I mean, I'm a writer here, and I submit work all the time. I don't go and register it anywhere. If someone copies it and sells it for millions, I'd sue them, since the work is mine. I'd have a good record that I wrote it, so I'd get the money.

Simple. I don't know why you think it's 'kinda wrong' that she could win the lawsuit if the Twilight author stole all of her work. That seems 'kinda right' to me.

Like I said the Twilight author will win. She has all the money in the world for a counter lawsuit. Like I said, it needs a copyright in order for it to have any legal standing. They were roommates were they not? Then the Twilight author can easily say that it was her roommate that stole her work because well, there is not going to be any evidence because the stories weren't publish.
How does anyone know that the work submitted by the Twilight author's roommate wasn't copied off the Twilight author? Wheres the proof? She just submitted it in a College essay but they were roommates. They could easily copied off each other.

And the lawsuit is about idea infringement....

The age, background etc, of the main-character which constitutes a majority of dialogue and thought referances, has no relevance to a books target audience?
