The ranks are for the strongest espada. Which means that is Yammy at 0 fought Stark (who is 1) Yammy would beat him.
Its not who is good at their own abilities its about who is strongest.

Lemme clearout 1 thing. Espada's Ranks arent used in how good they are. Its based on How good the Espada is in his own thing.
For example Noitora is ranked #5 For his Hardest Skin, Then Zommari #7 is seventh for his Speed, Yammy is ''0'' for his Raw Strength / His Potentional And his Destructable abilities.

Did you even clearly read the manga? They even said that he;s the only espade who's number changes after he is on his full spiritual level or something that manga said xD and the ranks from the espada go from "0" to "9" not 1 to 10 ^^
