    Default iPod Touch...

    What should I know?

I know there are lots of ways to hack them, but is it worth it for those of you that have done it?

What does this "jailbreaking" actually do?

    Thanks guys!

I have a jailbroken 2.2 iPhone 3G. They are basically taking over the world lol. I mean the device unjailbroken is alrdy utterly amazing, but jailbroken is just like an orgasm.

What it does is allow 3rd party apps to be installed on ur iphone/itouch (via Cydia or Installer). These do things such as customize the look of the device by adding themes, allow video recording, emulators, download vids off youtube, allow flash vids to be played on ur device, get any app for free (cracked apps), allow easier access to different functions, password lock anything, play games such as quake and doom, put things into categories, TONS of things, i couldnt list them all if I tried.

I was rele nervous to jailbreak my phone at first, but I finally did it and i couldnt be happier. There are no problems and its just 5x more amazing than it was unjailbroken. So I say do it. Very easy, and virtually no risk.

Heres my current theme (iNav Montimedia V2):

Oister, I have a jailbroken ipod touch and I love it. I have about 40 bucks of paid apps I got for free. You can change your whole intereface (springboard, lock screen, sliders, battery, wifi, etc). Gameboy emulators are pretty sweet and there are many many roms for it. Got NES emu's and it's slowly becoming a more and more advanced ipod. It's worth it and its really easy.

Ya, it is piracy. Im sure u can find them easily with sum googling. But rele there is an app u can get off Cydia called Installous which searches for them, downloads them, and installs them all on your device. No need to even visit websites if u use that.

Anyways; One question (Sorry for using your thread, but I don't want to make a new one).

What's the biggest difference between the generations(iphone)? (1g,2g and 3g)

Lol. I have paid for most of my paid apps actually. But, im kinda spoiled to.
    =P

The generations are hardware differences mainly. Best hardware in the 3g iphone and 2g ipod. I think only the 3G iphone has the 3G internet (not sure about that).

So it doesn't really matter that much if you have an iphone 1g?
[I actually ask this for a friend. He as an iphone 1g and he wants to know if the iphone 3g is really that much better or not (He doesn't use the internet btw)].

Well some apps can't be used at all or used as well with the 1g hardware. Some other random things require 3G also. There arent many things where 3G is required though. 1G isnt bad, but 3G is a better investment. Plus developers and such are focusing on 3G now so i wouldnt be surprised if more and more things become unavailable to 1G. Im also not sure if the huge upcoming software update will require a certain generation.

But overall, it doesnt rele matter for now. You won't be missing out on much if u have 1g.

The 1g was better in everything besides the 3g stuff.

So, you are basically saying that the 3G is like a second version of a game which adds some new apps but ruins the rest?
Is it a good idea to get a 3G?

I don't know any apps that require 3g, but I doubt that there is any worthy difference, as it is just for 2 things
    A) the phone-network: 100% backwards compatible; you don't need it.
faster internet: Well, Wlan is even faster; you don't need it.

However, the 1G iPhone is slightly bigger, but better built, with a better quality screen (afar from the first problematic charges).

Aside from that there is about no difference.

The 3G-version is not different in any aspect, besides the cheaper finish and the 3g chip.

That is the reason why there will never be a different firmware for those 2 devices.
Both are regrettably slow for Internet on the go, you have the pick between a page loading in 25 or 15 seconds.
I doubt that a developer specifically requiring 3g would make any sense and I don't know any app that does discriminate, as I already said.

A new version will come out not to far away from now anyways (that however won't magically speed up mobile Internet, just as 3g didn't).

JB apps that are worth it:
    Mobile Finder (like windows explorer)
    SSH (comes with J
    Cydia (comes with J
    Winterboard (theming)
SSB settings (toggle wifi on/off, kill unecessary processes, turn rotation on/off, etc in a convenint menu always one gesture away)
Cathegories (put programms in folders; a little too slow, a little unstable, tbh)
VLC player/pwnplayer/etc (diffrent media players for more formats, I don't use them really)
Emulators by Zodttd (atm, on 2.1+ only gpSPhone runs at a fully playable speed)
Safari plugins (the download plugin, the rest isn't that great)
Text editors and ebook readers (Though app store free ones are sufficient to do nearly the same job, often much better, but fail at delivering free access to all data you want afar from predefined sources)
    Nmap (lol)

    That's pretty much it.
I see myself as a power user, meaning that the device is probably constantly on.

If you are not into skinning (which can however improve the UI a lot, like categories, or SSBsettings) and hacking around for the sake of having downloaded and installed some unix binaries or apps without the use of any other tool, Jailbreak is not really necessary for anything.

The next iPhone will probably be announced June 8-12 at WWDC. That's when the 3g was revealed last year.

    Possibly...

Whoever cares can go on Macrumors, or similar pages, to get his fix.

So my friend's Iphone 1g would be almost similar to my 3g except some internet stuff? (I wont even use the internet, so it comes to almost the same thing, right?)

And about the market thing; I was just comparing my future 3g to my friend's 1g
Just wanted to know if a 3g was really way better than a 1g or not. Guess not.. After reading Ronin's post, it sounds like 1g is better built..
