    Default Selective Service System?

Anyone else get this? It's a thing where you register and basically gives the US the right to draft you in the event of war.Not complying gets you a fine of $200,000 or something and 5 years.I got this in the mail yesterday. You have to be 18 to register and it's mandatory.Refusing to register is like denying your U.S. Citizenship according to them.

And the only son or sole survivor of a family thing doesn't work, you STILL have to sign up.The only good thing I actually like about this is the eligibility for grants and financial aid for college.

Every male, upon turning 18, has to sign that. It's nothing new.

Exactly what I was thinking... did you not know about this? It has been going on for many many years and you should not have surprised because that means one of two things, your parents didn't tell you enough about the real world or your school system sucks (I would go w/ #2 since you go to a US school like I did LOL).

I didn't get anything in the mail but I had to register for it to be able to get financial aid for when I go to college or else you can't get it.
Edit: To be honest I didn't know about it until I was doing my financial aid don't feel ashamed just do it now.

If I remember correctly mine was sent out prior to elections of that year which was about 5 months before my 18th birthday, that may be one of the issues. The other thing is you can go to I believe your local USPS or Library and fill one out. But yeah since you did it for FASFA it doesn't matter.

That sentence had so many problems with it, I'm not even sure what the hell you were trying to say to begin with...

Also, I'm 18, have been for 5 months now. And I also have never heard of this bullshit.

Wow, you guys have it pretty shitty. There'd be a f*cking revolt if they tried that over here.

No man makes us fight for King and Country anymore. That's f*cked up.

PS: Why can I write 'shitty' but not 'a$$'?

When you went to get your license on your 18th Birthday you didn't have to register for the draft?

Everyone who is required to register may do so 30 days before or 30 days after their 18th birthday. If they fail to do so, they are technically in violation of the law.
Registering for the draft is not only the law, but also necessary in securing your future. Not registering can result in a fine of up to 250,000,00 and up to five years in prison. Students who fail to register will be ineligible for Federal student loans or grants such as Pell Grants, College Work Study, Guaranteed Student/Plus Loans, and National Direct Student Loans. Also, the Workforce Investment Act, which offers programs that train for jobs in auto mechanics and other skills, is only open to men who are registered. Also, men who failed to register will be denied jobs in the Federal branch of Government and Postal Services.

Accept the fine and then ***** about how it's impossible to pay it because of this recession that the government has put us in and fails to fix.

    See how they like that..

Lol I never did that, I prolly should. There were posters all over my school.

And it doesn't let them draft you. It just lets them know that your 18, and should there BE a draft, your name is thrown in the hat to be pulled.

I'd never heard of such a thing before. Seems a bit worrying, but whatever. It's not like I have to live in your country.

I wonder why they need it at all, really. If it's mandatory, your consent doesn't mean anything. You'd still probably see thousands upon thousands of draft dodgers if they tried to introduce the draft again, forced promise or no. And as for them needing it to check who's eligible for the draft, can't they just use birth records for that?

Why buy a herding dog when the sheep organize themselves?
