A RADIO transmission from outer space could be a message from aliens, say astronomers.

The signal - named SHGbo2+14a - has been beamed to Earth three times since 2002 and picked up by the giant Arecibo radio telescope in Puerto Rico.

Scientists have not been able to properly analyse it as it is only about a minute long and very weak.

Experts from the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (Seti) say it is unlikely to be interference or a hoax.

Others claim aliens wanting to send messages - like Steven Spielberg's ET who tried to phone home - would transmit via a physical object because radio signals break up during space travel.

But Seti researcher Eric Korpela of the University of California, insisted: "We are looking for something that screams out 'artificial'. But I can't think of any way to make a signal like this."

The Seti project uses software running as screensavers on millions of computers to sift through the data from the Arecibo telescope.

The frequency of the signal is one which experts argue extraterrestrials would be most likely to use if they wanted to make contact, the New Scientist reported.

Thought this was pretty cool. Its old, but interesting.

I think it's a big step saying it's possible aliens when they have no idea what it is. Science has a long way to go.

They could still be in the cavemen era. Or something totally different, the possibilities are endless when you take into account just how large our universe is.

And who said its aliens using "radio"? It could be ANYTHING. Our radio receptors are just what happened to pick it up.

80% of life on earth is underwater, 95% of the ocean is unexplored. If they can't explain or explore our own backyard then i don't think i'll take their "theory" on the infinity and beyond seriously and the beings of it.

There was one found in the '70s as well, but they couldn't find it again...this seems to happen every few years.

Yeah I agree with him. Why does an alien civilization have to be superior to us? For all we know the universe is full of ******ed dinosaurs throwing their feces at each other.

it would take alot of feces in the right place to produce a radio capable of sending interstellar signals.


then again, according to the bible the earth was created on lesser odds.

why do people always assume humans are the most unadvance civilization. what if the other civilization is the exact same as us, or has worst technology.

Well, another problem is that our scientists assume that for a planet to have life, it has to be the same distance from the sun as the earth, etc. This is the biggest assumption of them all; they also assume all life must be carbon based. Until we get to the stars, and explore other planets....
