Somebody who bought the game will have more cards than you do, aka more units to choose from. But you still gain cards from doing the pve campaigns. For somebody to have a huge edge they would need to have spent a lot of money. Even then it's easy to spot these people, you just don't go pvp'ing against them.
I'd say 90% of the people playing are f2p users.
For what it's worth this week i was doing the first 2 player co-op missions. The guy who was with me was decked out pretty good, he obviously had spent some money on the game.
Know what happened? I had to defend the npcs from the infinite waves on ennemies by myself cause the guy was stuck at the last ennemy camp and his units kept getting killed. I ended up sending a couple units to help him so we could do the last battle.
He had probably just started, but still he spent some money and i didn't, but i still did better than him.
Honestly nothing is ever truely free, most free mmo's are pay to win. Battle forge is the same, but the difference is that in battle forge you don't have to play agaisnt the guy who spent 500$ to be the best if you don't want to.
