Konami outsourced the remake to a western developer. They're the ones responsible for these shitty changes.
they are trying to focus more on the horror aspect. Harry wasnt much of a fighter so it was unrealistic for them to give him a gun and have him have automatically know how to operate it. With this you are constantly running and are under stress, the only way to live is too hide really

Also with the otherworld being made of ice who said this wouldnt be scary if not scarier. In many horrorific situations has ice and snow been used of accordingly. Like in the Movie "The Thing" for example.
