Dragonica Online: The Divine Comedy
Introduction: So my friend and I spent a good chunk of our time testing out the closed beta of IAH's Dragonica Online to give you guys some quick thoughts before it hits open beta. The first rule of Dragonica is there is no Dragonica (just kidding guys). What I mean to say is that it's good when the creators of a game can have a little fun with what they are doing and not take themselves too seriously and that's exactly what Dragonica accomplishes. Super Saiyan hair, turning monsters into frogs, and Jedi lightsabers are but few of many interesting things in the game. The cultural and anime references littered throughout Dragonica are a big plus that keep things a little more interesting than the average MMO.
Customization: Character creation was pretty simple and easy to use. I was surprised to see that they actually had a decent amount of customization. I don't know about you guys, but I don't like watching 100 people that look like me running around the screen. So for those of you that are very adamant (****) about customization Dragonica has a decent amount.
Graphics: The graphics (touchy subject for ONRPGers) I felt fit the game perfectly and you don't need an uber computer to run it (which is good because mine is so ancient it's steam powered). Some of you may not go for that "chibi-cute" look that Dragonica has, but it grows on you. Just don't let your friends walk in on you playing it (I kid).
Game play: The game play is the most important part of any game in my opinion so I'm going to be most crucial on this. The first time I did a combo I was like "hell yes". The 100th time I did one I wasn't so enthusiastic. It can get pretty repedative, but in retrospect what MMORPG doesn't? At least you get to have some interesting combat that isn't point-and-click. In a strange way the combat reminds me a lot of a Hack-&-Slash game which is great for me because I am a Diablo fanatic. What's really great about this game is the instances. The longer the combos you do and the faster you complete an instance decides how much loot you get at the end, and if you're in a party everyone gets their own loot (WOO!). I don't know about you, but I hate when you're the only one who ends up with nothing after an instance run.
Closing: In closing I would like to say that I'm definitely going to be playing Dragonica in open beta. The game brings some interesting things to the table of MMOG's and is the most fun I've had in a F2P in a long time. Give it a chance and you just may find yourself a slave to that addictive Hack-&-Slash type combat.
See you all in game,
Demure
