Sequel to Best-Selling Co-op Thriller Coming This Holiday

June 1, 2009 - Valve, creators of best-selling game franchises (such as Half-Life and Counter-Strike) and leading technologies (such as Steam and Source), today announced Left 4 Dead 2 (L4D2), the sequel to the best-selling and critically-acclaimed co-operative multiplayer thriller.

Coming exclusively to Xbox 360 and PC, L4D2 promises to set a new benchmark for co-operative action games and become one of 2009's marquee titles.

"A large part of how Left 4 Dead became 2008's top-selling new IP on Xbox 360 and the PC was the custom-tailored gameplay made possible by the AI Director," said Gabe Newell, president and co-founder of Valve. "With the knowledge gained from creating the original, new technology, and a passionate team, L4D2 will set a new benchmark for cooperative action games."

Set for release on November 17, the title adds melee combat to enable deeper co-operative gameplay, with items such as a chainsaw, frying pan, axe, baseball bat, and more.

Introducing the AI Director 2.0, L4D's dynamic gameplay is taken to the next level by giving the Director the ability to procedurally change weather effects, world objects, and pathways in addition to tailoring the enemy population, effects, and sounds to match the players' performance. The result is a unique game session custom fitted to provide a satisfying and uniquely challenging experience each time the game is played.

Featuring new Survivors, boss zombies, weapons, and items, Left 4 Dead 2 offers a much larger game than the original with more co-operative campaigns, more Versus campaigns, and maps for Survival mode available at launch.

Supported by a $10+ million marketing campaign, Left 4 Dead has sold over 2.5 million retail copies since it was released in November of 2008. Left 4 Dead 2 is targeted for release on Xbox 360 and the PC on November 17, 2009, and will be launched worldwide with a multi-million dollar marketing campaign across TV, Outdoor, and Online.

"Left 4 Dead was backed by our most aggressive advertising campaign to date, and resulted in a top 5 showing on two platforms during holiday 2008," said Doug Lombardi, VP of marketing at Valve. "Left 4 Dead 2 is a larger game and will be supported with even more consumer and retail advertising programs than the original."

Left 4 Dead 2 will be featured as the cover story on PC Gamer and Official Xbox Magazines this month.

Ugh, they already lost 25%++ of community by announcing this. And if l4d2 will have a full game price they'll lose another 25%++ of gaming community. Not to mention many ppl hated its visuals...as one man stated, sequels fail hard, and this will be big one. And also noone will buy l4d 1 now, because theres is no point. All things that are in 2nd l4d shoud be in the 1 as people wanted and as Valve promised, but meh, they decided to come up with "brand new game", imho, really bad move. Speaking for myself, I'll ofc buy it or just will find another way to play it, ho ho ^ ^ Can't w8 for it :P

Judging a game just because it's a sequel is also a "really bad move." I highly doubt they will lose that much of the community just because there is a second game coming.

This will be fail for Valve because of the engine in order to make graphics, gameplay/physics any better for Left 4 Dead '2' they will need a whole new engine and I doubt after the Orange Box engine they will be making another soon I mean for freaks sake there isn't even a new counter Strike out yet!

All in all it will be all hype up until November 9th or whatever it will be all good times as soon as 9th comes 'oh sorry we have misjudged the dating and now it will be released in 2020 sorry for inconvenience.

If it was console only it would be DLC but i dont think steam can do payed DLC for their games on the PC so they just release a sequel.

Its not the degree in which what you said was trolling or whatnot, its you posting something irrelevant to what leathel posted. Tell me what the reason was in proving what he did was wrong? onRPG seems to do that alot. People come in saying whats wrong with what the OP said, making them feel right. There is no reason to. I don't see the big deal. l4d is an awesome game, l4d2 will be better, or funnester :P

Think about it, they want people to make mods and various other maps for the game. Well why not make a better version of the game with things like melee weapons. If you wanted to mod swords into lfd, I bet you'll have an easier time doing it with lfd2 than you would with lfd.

I'm sure the AI is better as well as other systems, not to mention the fact that you can cut/blast the infected to pieces and chunks now.

To me this looks like they gave the PC community a better version of the game to mod.

Louis is always killed first being the token black guy, then the old dude francis next and Zoey survives.
Basically I would rather can on with the original characters and I do not care for this new lot.
