Default Turning on "bloom" effect in gaming

Has anyone noticed that a lot of MMOs in the past few years (especially Asian MMOs) have abused the bloom effect?

For those who aren't familiar with it, check out the wikipedia article. It basically creates fringes of light (what I like to call "little fuzzies") around objects in a game to simulate the effects of real-world cameras.

In moderation it looks good but its been used ad nauseum to cover up crappy graphics. Some games have it as a scalable option, but others (Perfect World, Rappelz) leave you to choose between ugly textures and la-la-hazy-dreamland.

Well it does cover up for some bad graphics, so I can't say anything bad about it. Unless they go overboard with it, and how you mentioned, the game ends up looking like a blurry mess.

when it's cranked up to really high levels it reminds me of the Gaussian blur
and it makes my eyes water a little

too much bloom looks like if the camera man smudge his fingers on the lens after eating a greasy meal

i hate bloom.. always turn it off in games, i agree some games really over-use it. like UT3, its probably updated now but back when it just released the only way to turn it of was trough a config file =/ bloom/motion blur or other graphic options like this only make my eyes bleed and thank god i can turn it off otherwise it would be reason enough for me to quit a normally great game. free realms is another game where it anoys me, the bloom + the fact anti aliassing isnt working (and both cant be turned off/on) was enough for me to quit.

i want my games to look sharp so i can go on days/nights without getting any eye-issues =p

edit: btw i beleve this bloom effect doesnt only make u cry but also make u require glasses sooner then u normally would..

Hmm, with ut3 on the ps3 you have a few post prossessing settings, I use vivid.

even on intense its not blurry, but the colors really come out so bright!.

A bit of bloom with anti-aliasing can do some great magic, but when its 100% super bloom It's like staring into the suns sheen off of a car.

I never liked the bloom effect, always have it turned off. Though I have to admit some games look much better with it on.

Shaiya's bloom made me laugh so hard, blinded me and when I turned it off the game looked like utter crap.
