If you haven't already, I recommend picking up some free clothing to wear while you work on getting something better.

It's definitely not something you can just jump into, try to get someone to tour you around a bit and explain a few stuff.

In my opion SL is okay. Its terrible for someone like me in terms or "playing" it. I do however make and sell stuff which is great. Within one year of playing I've made enough to get my current PC, a PS3, a better gfx card, and pay a bill or two.

So far over the span of 2 years, I've made about 3,000 to 4,000 real life money (US dollars) in profit. Which isn't a lot of money and is no where near a real job, but it makes for great spending money.

Of course not anyone can just jump in and play it. When I started I thought the game was crap so I quit for 5 months or so. Then I read a blog on it and heard about freebie places. So i played again and discovered freebie areas. Back then there wasn't many around, but now theres plenty. The best one around is a place called metaFreebies.

The game really makes for a good social type of game depending where you go and who you are. The people that play for this reason tend to be older (30's to late 40s) and even 20's. Most of these people are not gamers, and are very different from people who play MMOs which is why i understand why the people in this thread say the game is sh-t, (i have to deal with these people because some of them are my customers). Theres other types of people that play SL, but I theres so man I can only explain a few in this post.

There is plenty of action in the game. Anything you can do in RL you can do in SL. The same goes for anything you can imagine. Want to be a wizard? A gun slinger? Own a giant boat? Fly a giant space ship? Get three ******s and do it with them? Own pets? It can all be done since everything is player created. Anything can be done witht he right scripting skills. Which is why weapons are possible.

Which brings me the next type of people who play this game: RolePlayers. They are as close as you'll get to gamers. Mostly stuck up, perverted old people, SL roleplayers buy weapons (which I created and sell also). The reason I say perverted is because most roleplaying areas has a lot to do with adult themes. Rugged cities where **** fetishes are encouraged are one of the main things. Theres a few places that aren't like that though and just focus on politics and combat. Two examples would be a FF7 and Naruto roleplaying areas that people have made and developed. Theres plenty of action in the game when you've found the right weapons and right places which is pretty easy if you have the money.

Theres plenty of ways the make money in the game. Without going into much details, I'll list as many practicle ways as I can think of.

    -sell things
-put money into the game by buying it
    -become a dancer (stripper)
-become an escort (******, yes you can have sex in the game with animations and genitals and all)
-camping (you sit at someones place if they have a camping chair and gain money extremly slowly while they gain traffic points)
-take surveys. This one I will explain a bit. Theres sites assosiated with the game like OMGcredits.coma and metarl.com that let you take surveys and then get paid with ingame money.
    -become a DJ
    -Run a strip club
    -become a teacher

Theres other things you can do like beg or be a freelance builder or scripter. Even sell RL paintings or drawing in the game.

Its pretty easy to make friends and form relationships, but going in as a gamer will be awful because its really not a game unless you create the things that can make it into a game for you (or buy them, or to public areas that were made to feel like a game, theres plenty of them).

I could go on and on, but in order to explain all of SL and what is possible, it would take about 3 or 4 text books. So in short, anything you can think of doing within SL is pretty much possible.

Honestly, unless you enjoy roleplaying, living a pretend life in a a virtual world, or want to make friends online, or dont intend to learn how to build or script, SL may not be worth it. But with a little time anyone can learn to build. Its scripting that can be impossible for most people, but there are plenty of free lance scripters. Its possible to have fun without putting money into the game, but to make a decent ammount of money you'll need to either spend a while earning it, or just put some into the game with real life cash and hope to make it back. A few girls that sell clothes in the game, have said that they started out as dancers to earn money so that they could buy land or rent a shop and start selling. But even becoming a dancer requires money, you have to buy a decent skin as the default ones arent so great, you also need decent clothes to make your avatar worth looking at, small things like that.

If anyone has questions they can PM me. SL is a love/hate relationship with me. Its gotten me a great PC and a PS3 and soon much more, but I still have to deal with unpleasent people. I wont post my SL name nor the business I run, because there may be SL players lurking around here that know me ingame. But if you PM me, I can offer you help ingame.

There's something about Second Life DJs that's I've always wondered about, do they hook up normal DJ equipment to their computer, use Tractor/Virtual DJ or is there some sort of program/mod for Second Life that they use?

Normally I'd think they'd just hook up normal equipment to their computer, but a friend of mine used to DJ on Second Life and he doesn't seem like the kind of guy to spend a few thousand dollars on stuff like that.

They use online radios. I'm not sure how to get one, ut I know anyone can get them and I'm pretty sure theres like a monthly fee for them. You just pretty need:

    -online radio station
-a mic (to talk and such, I imagine a DJ that just plays songs wouldnt be that interesting)
-a ton of songs. (or a peer 2 peer program to download songs).

You need a ton of songs and not just stuff you listen to because the DJs that get really good tips are the ones that do song requests. So the things needed are outside the game, but you dont need any professional things to start it up, just your PC. There are some people in SL that make it easy though, you pay them and their systems pings their website and creates a DJ account, and they probably email you with setup instuctions and such, I don't know much about it beyond that.

As for the money-making side of it as well as clubs in general...

I ran a strip club for a while in SL, but as an owner didn't make anything since I only got 10% of what the Dancers made in tips, on top of paying the land fees. On the out side, since dancers seem to get a lot of tips and the owners take a small percentage, it would seem like clubs make a ton of money, but they don't. A lot of people love that life style, but cant live in real life so they live it in second life. To keep their clubs going they attach a mall to it. Which is why 99.99% of every club in SL has a mall attached to it where people pay the owners to rent and sell stuff.

When I ran the club, the DJ worked and was paid in tips. I only took about 5% of the tips he made and he could come to club anytime he wanted. I'm not sure how others do it since its all up to the SL users. Some will probably charge the DJ a certain ammount each week or for each event to take tips. While some will just let the DJ work there free. And then theres dome DJs who are on a pay roll and are considered as a something will will get the clubs more popular and keep people there longer, there by getting more tips for the dancers.

I guess its situational, since it mainly depends on tips.

How can anyone call themselves a DJ with a straight face if they just turn on a radio for people?

Or you can be in some amazing final fantasy looking environment with cool glowing gadgets and weapons etc, and you will bump into alien tentacles with poseballs. Sitting on them isnt a good idea..
