Actually if you are thinking that you're too old, I think fewer kiddies play MMOs than FPSes.
Also, if you think CoD is crap, you are probably going to be disappointed by the MMOFPS fare out there.
But in any case, I'd recommend trying Gunz, Exteel, maybe Operation7

i'd go and buy css (counter strike source) pretty fast. Sometimes you will see kids of 5 years old but overal a pretty fun game with many
options/gametypes you're going to play like: Normal game (human vs human) Zombie game (if you will be buying this for the zombies do it but download the css zombie mods) Surf (its like going true a parcour or something) and some more options.
If you want to know there aren't that much hackers, alot of pro's though. Play clan matches, it's fun with friends (if you have, I don't) and get better.

Left 4 Dead or Killing Floor both are good zombie genre games. Peggle an addicting puzzle(ish) gamevery fun. Garrys mod cant go wrong with that one. All I can think of off the top of my head.

Team Fortress 2? Guild Wars (RPG-ish though)?
Even Planetside.. In the worst case scenario, quit MMOs altogether and play single player games. They're better in some cases.

Like CrimeCraft, its just stiff gameplay. Running and shooting, not even any jumping going on. If it had something simular to Gunz Online, it'd probably be okay. Even I'll admit that a game WoW would be a billion times more interesting that game.
Anyway, stay away from MMOs for a while and play left 4 dead, lol.
