Default How much does it cost to Produce a decent 3D MMORPG?

Ok before the flaming starts, a little bit about me and my intention

I'm your average College kid, not really a mmorpg maniac. But i played quite a lot when in high school. Couple of ones i loved were Gunbound, flyff, water margin and Perfect world online.

The thought of this thing originally came up about 6 years ago when me and 4 friends watched the anime HxH. There has been many attempt for 2D mmorpgs by people and of course the official 2D/3D games, but all failed.

We thought there are way too many elements in it and the potential for a successful mmorpg is massive. Now of course these were all just bullshits and imaginations back then. Fun stuffs such as the celestial tower, greedisland, hunter exam, ren, nen, hatsu etc etc.

Now of course looking at games like WOW, it must've costed hundreds of millions of dollars at this point or maybe not? But it has to start off at some point. Me and my friends were victims of certain events 2 years ago, half a year ago our cases were set by our lovely lawyer. We got quite a deal of compensation. Now 5 million usd is definitely not enough to complete a game like perfect world/wow, but it should get it started and fairly far into development should it not? Many of you gonna say we have no life or w/e the heck you want. HxH is something we loved, and making it into a great game has been something we look forward to. Who knows, it might be a good chance to start off a business that we enjoy.

We're not here to sell our products, asking for donations or hiring anybody. Just opinions from the best of the best mmorpg players here on onrpg. Things like copyright etc etc will be there, but it can be dealt with money of course.

What you can expect from smaller business/starting businesses is that we will do things fast. Waiting years for a korean to English translation is simply stupid. Opinions are all we ask for. And of course the main question, does it require a lot to start a game off?

    Thanks

Well, If i recall it correctly, Darkfall started off as an small group like yours, but since they were just 5-6 devs, making the game took years

They eventually got bought up by some random Greek company and they could publish their game due to that

So i guess that if you wanna make a game, you should do something unique, hype it, and get bought up by a bigger company (if you don't wanna be doing the game for 10+ years)

I guess it depends if you're gonna use an existing engine or make one yourselfs...

You also could start off with some engines made for freelancers. Torque and Realmcrafter and stuff like that.

Depends on what skills your group has.

Not quite sure, but I think the biggest cost to make a game is to pay the employees and the game engine if you buy it from other company.

all those that made similar posts to this gave up when their MMO wasnt even out of the sketch board

good luck nonetheless. Realmcrafter is a good starting point
We must go forward, not backward. Upward, not forward. And always twirling, twirling, twirling towards freedom!

    Currently Playing:
    - Guild Wars 2

    Waiting for:
    - Warhammer 40K: Eternal Crusade

if you plan to invest ur money in developing a game, you didn't deserve to get it in the first place. game companys usually start off with no money at all.

invest it somewhere else, 5 million usd could build up any kind of company and make it successful (intelligence required of course)

6x C++ programmers (At least 5 years experience)
12x Artist (2d/3d/cinematic/concept) (At least 3 years experience)
    2x Writers/Story (At least 5 years experience)
    2x Leaders (1 as Idea/Creativity & 1 as Budget/Focus) (At least 3 years experience)
?x Musicians (only for 2-4 months needed)

That would be a good setup, for a small/mid sized RTS game or FPS game.

MMORPG games cost more due to time, more people, and guess what TIME!

    Side notes:
Also it doesn't matter if you have 500 people or 40 people working on the game. its actually better if you had around 8 programmers (experienced) and a lot of good artists (around 14) cause that's how you get good quality stuff.
