LOVE is an engine that uses Lua. Very easy to learn, and comes with everything needed to make a 2D game.
Im kinda suprised i didn't see Cryengine 3 on the list, its a solid engine for graphics and physics and not hard to get into. It's free for non commercial use.

For 3d modelling characters zbrush is really good, once you learn to use it its a really good program for sculpting characters, it's easy to unleash your creativity without worrying too much about the polycount because you can change the subdivisions easily. Making a skeleton with z-spheres and sculpting on top of it with a wacom is like sketching a character, but in 3ddefinitely worth the money.
