Default Do you look forward to growing older?

I know most of the people on onRPG are on their early 20's or on their teens. But I wonder, have you guys ever thought of what your life will be like when you are older? Older as in the mid-40's or 50's. Or is that something you rather not think about? If you do wonder, how do you see yourself? Do you even think you will get to that age? Do you even WANT to get to that age? Do you picture yourself with a family? With children? Rich, living a life of luxury?

I don't really like to think about it because I'm somewhat afraid of the future. More like, I don't think I will even get to that age, heck, not even to 35 (I have some heart problems, meh). If I do get to that age, I see myself living with my life partner, with no children. Hopefully with enough money as to travel a lot and with a good job that I enjoy.

In some ways, I do. Just not really looking forward to all of the responsibilities, worries, hassles and any other problems that might cross my path.

Things should probably start to slow down as you enter the 50's. Well, that is if you don't have children and what not. To me they are more trouble than joy.

I'm kind of afraid of what the world around me would be like as I get older. Wars, global catastrophes, recessions, economic downfalls, apocalypse theories. Though, If I die. I want to die happy, with a person that I love next to me. I want to make something of my life before I die. I don't want to die without the feeling of accomplishment.

    I disagree.

Let's take your friends as an example. I'm guessing they aren't trying to have children yet, but in the future. Say they finally try to have a kid of their own, but bad news, turns out she can't conceive. That's an unexpected event that can truly change everything in seconds, the way they feel about each other, about having children of their own, etc.

Sure, you have one life, I completely agree with you on that. I won't even argue. I say the same thing. It's miraculous that we're even living. We've got it good, and we take things for granted. Really, I dont know where I'm heading with this so I'll just get back to the point.
You should do things in life to make it worth living, not just follow the same daily schedule for the rest of your days.

The amount people look forward to their future seems to be in direct proportion to how young they are, but that's only natural. You never stop growing and changing, but you do slow down. Even as you approach 30 you are not the person that you will end up being.

And I think it's normal for young men to want to live that bachelor lifestyle all their lives. When you're young and don't have so much freedom and money, the thought of having a life where you can live like those rich people and just do as you please seems really appealing. You'll probably change as you grow older though. The responsibilities are a completely neccesary part of all those good things you want.

You want a house and a car and money, well that comes with strings attatched. You want to be happy and well adjusted? Well that has strings too, and it's called companionship. Companionship's strings often being kids, whether you wanted them or not.

I think the vast majority of young people who say they don't want kids will change their minds one day. Not all of them, granted, but most. That big house and car and all the money will start to feel empty eventually. 20, 30, 40 years is a long time. What about when you hit 60? 70? Still gonna be cruising the bars, or have you just got 20 years of watching daytime TV and talking to your cats ahead of you?

As for me, I'm in my mid 20s and I don't care if I'm rich or have a big house by the time I hit 50. If I never had kids then I'd feel I missed out on one of life's miricles, but apart from that, as long as I'm happy, then I'm happy, so to speak. What more can you ask for?

Back when I was in 8th grade, I used to look in the mirror and think "I wonder what I will look like when I'm 18."

    I am disappointed.

I'm not, what gave you that impression?

    Are you assuming I'm American?

I'm already an outcast, why go and tell everyone I'm a planetary foreigner?

Anyway, the only thing I guess I "look forward" to is continued learning. I've never really stopped, and just when you feel you've got a grasp on things; you learn something new about yourself or the world.

I don't care actually. If I can have fun at nights I'm all for growing older. Whenever I go to school I'm stuck there from 8 to 4 anyway ;D so what does 9 to 5 matters if you earn money over it?

I was generalising. I meant American as in 1st world (as opposed to those millions and millions of people who don't get much more of a choice than whether to drink dirty water or just go thirsty).

It's just usually the Americans who forget that they are so privileged

Sometimes I do miss the time of my younger years, the freedom of not having to "care" about what happenes around me.

But I wouldn't want to relive them, nor would I want to stay as old as I am now.

The immortalty that I shall gain, is not through staying as I am now, but through growing and gaining titles throughout life that will have me remembered even after the last fragment of my body has been picked up by the wind and faded into oblivion.

I very much look forward to it.

I've never agreed with the notion of getting to a certain age and "settling down". Why can't you just do what you want, all the time? You get one life, don't throw that away just because society wants you to have a kid, get married and stay in one career.
I think by "settling down" it's an expression that only people at that age can feel and experience. Like with weed. A lot of people tell you that it causes cancer, makes you hallucinate, and has bad side-effects once smoked. It's quite different than that. Only people who smoke can understand that.

    That's just my 2 cents.
