Default In your point of view, what separates a good game from a bad game?

So, what the first thing you see on a game to classify it as a bad game or a good game?

IMO, a good game is a game where you level up to be able to kill something or to do a dungeon or to finish a quest.

And a bad game is a game where you kill something or keep running a dungeon over and over or do quests to level up.

    Thats pretty much it.

I like games where the leveling isnt the main task on the game, but you grind somehow to be able to do dungeons or face bosses. Like, "I wanna do red cave dungeon but Im too weak and I die a lot on it, so Ill grind and level up to be able to make it"... pretty much like DOFUS.

And I hate games where the main task is to level up, it seems pointless (99% of the games out there)

    And you guys?

    = Good game

Bad games the opposite. I sit down for what felt like several hours of grind and it was only 5 minutes.

Since you posted this in the MMORPG section, then I will use MMORPGs.

    You need many things.

    1. Good immerssive graphics. Ambient, specular, and layered lighting with high res textures.
    2. Great soundtrack and ambient sound.
    3. Great character development system ( I hate most games that wont allow you to distribute stats).
    4. Good payment system. Be it micro or P2P.
    5. Great customer service.

#5 is the biggest factor for a MMORPG to survive.

    Customization
    Unique strategic battle system

And everything else Cyber7 said. He pretty much summed it up.

Quests with good rewards and exp. Dungeons, different looking areas and maybe minor grind with something to look froward to.

A good game is fun and/or pleasurable to play.

A bad game is not fun and/or a drag to play.

Everything else is really up in the air.

    - Real time combat with good mechanics
    - In depth customization with the option to allocate different skills/abilities
    - multiple jobs with at least 2 different weapon types along with the ability to change, master and mix everything on one character.
    - complex/in depth item creation systems

a good game should include those.

    Originality is the key.
And if the cloud bursts, thunder in your ear.

You shout and no one seems to hear.

Probably the reason I love DnF so much. Heavy skill usage is definitely preferred, since Auto-Attacking feels kind of disgusting. I don't mind Grind so long as I enjoy going through the xp. Be it questing or just killing here and there.

Primarily, difficulty that breeds skill. It's mostly because of my over-amped ego but I almost like watching my less talented party members die on something I think is "easy to kill". It's a good laugh.
    same thing here for me.

    Good game:
    Grind
    Pvp
    Good Customer Service

    Bad:
    Quest based.
    Endless dungeons.

That's what seperates a bad/good game in my perspective.

In MY point of view, a good game has a good community. So, if the game is good, i expect to make a friend with a close level of mine, and level together, because MY GOD is it boring to level alone. And a bad game is if you have too much grind, bad customer service, too high p2p tax, abusive GMs and of course, bad community. I don't wanna be called a noob just because i'm new. I've been playing mmorpgs since 2005.

I want a game where I'm leveling for a reason. I don't want to level just so I can get to the level after. I want to be able to level for that new item set, to enter that dungeon, etc. etc.

Good game: tons of grind so that only perhaps 20% of the population acheive later levels in the first year.

Bad game: quest based, no grind, ez sauce
