A report in Next-Generation indicates that E3 2006 may have been the last Electronic Entertainment Expo ever, or at least, as we know it.
Although there hasn't been any official announcement from the Entertainment Software Association (E3's organizers), rumor around the games industry is that our beloved E3 is no more.
It seems that the reasons for the change are mostly economic. Next-Generation reports, ""the larger exhibitors have jointly decided that the costs of the event do not justify the returns, generally measured in media exposure." The larger companies, like Electronic Arts, Midway and Activision have for long been organizing their own days for the media to see and play their upcoming titles. As E3 is much more hectic than their individual events, the larger publishers question the value of showing off their products on the packed floors of the Los Angeles Convention Center.
There are sayings that the show may continue on in a different form. The new show would be reduced in scope and scale and probably also be moved from the massive LACC to a much smaller venue.
An official press announcement containing more details is expected to be released tomorrow. More on this surprising story as it unfolds.
