Most of your complaints about MMOs seem to gravitate on the idea that they should be more like action games (i.e., bad AI, grind, auto-attack, inability to jump right in). But the core of MMORPGs focuses around progression and familiarity. MMORPGs are not about fast-twitch gameplay and raw skill. They're usually about making good decisions and being rewarded for hard work and time spent. This goes back to the early days of RPGs - whether you won a battle was based on how good your HP, attack, defense, etc. was compared to the enemy. This kind of stat-based gameplay is what makes a true MMORPG. The games that are more action-oriented, at least IMO, represent changing attitudes and wants of the gaming population.
