I like good mind puzzling animes like Connan the detective, Evangelion, Kurogane No Linbarrels, and Welcome to the NHK, and I also like good robot animes like Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann!

I second 2nd Gig. Stand Alone Complex was just as interesting, but not as good.

Also, Code Geass wasn't bad.

Gundam Seed was also good.

But for god's sake; please watch the subs. Though if you must, Ghost in the Shell does a fairly decent job of dubbing.

i second Higurashi no Naku Koro ni. this anime is totally under rated imo. note that maybe u'll be like me... first you might get turned down by the loli's with their cute voices, then u will think this anime is just crazy and make no sense at all, you will be confused allot and maybe feel like stopping watching arround ep5-6 but trust me once i followed whole season one and began with season 2 i started to think this anime is beyond awesome and brilliant xD so bear with it, its so worth it! im at season 2 episode 11 right now and things turned out pretty interesting. i even had to peel away a tear on some point i would have never expected it, it wasnt even a sad moment or anything either, more the oposide. never had that before in my life. (think it was arround ep8-10 of season2)

really great anime, i dunno whats considered as a noob anime but im sure this isnt one of them =p
