Most of the times they shut a game down, is because they have a lack of players.

A p2p mmo *COULD* survive with a f2p server, but is not always the case.
If a f2p mmo dies due a lack of players, doesn't matter what cause, you pretty much can consider it dead.

It's a rather complex situation, as they don't shut it down for no reason at all.

I should update this but all my effort went into writing this lousy excuse.

Actually, in some cases, converting a p2p game over to f2p can actually increase the player base, dramatically. The issue is, though, finding a suitable, mildly interruptive means to to fund it.

well if you are unlucky enough to find a crummy, buggy, unfinished, empty of players, boring game so great that you want to buy a lifetime subscription then its kind of your fault.

i mean whats the alternative? pander to the diehard fans and charge them 50x the monthly fee to keep the game running?

stuff like this happens all the time, outside the world of gaming too.

i guess its sad if its your pet game that gets the chop... but honestly.... are you really going to get that excited about a game that has less than 10'000 paying members?

    think about it people.

If the game was good enough, then there will be a private server. ;o

What about situations where a game changes so drasticly that its no longer the same (looking at you SWG). Should allowances be made for that as well?

Well I do like the comparison to a canceled TV show I think its more like a food place that shuts down. They might have had some amazing hamburgers but when they close that's the end of those amazing burgers.

I wish that were true. But honestly, getting private servers going is a pretty difficult task.

It may actually have been easier in the past when less of the data stream was encrypted and there was a higher concentration of technically skilled players on your average MMO.

Both true. Check the link to the EnB Emulator in my sig (proven many times by mods not to be in forum violation due to EA not currently supporting any space based mmo).

EnB had a huge fan base, a fan base that was crushed when EA bought out Westwood and decided very shortly after that they would shift most of the Westwood resources to Ultima Online development. EA cared very little about the game and allowed it to reach a state where many would assume EA's actions were right when they closed EnB.

4-5 years later, an Emulator is still in development. EA has made no lawsuit against the emulator developers; however, have helped them in no way either.

It's been in beta a few times, and data development is going slowly, relying on item and xp curves based on fan formulas from years ago.
