    Default writer's block

Okay writing my college essays and am experiencing some awful writer's block. I know what I want to write, but when I get to actually writing it, I can't keep a focused train of thought, nor can I make it sound any good... Is there something you guys do to help you overcome writer's block besides just wait it out?

Well no notes to go over, and i don't really have a plan :x The topics are really broad so I just have a general idea of what I want to say.. I suppose that's the problem, though I can't really think of anything that would be even slightly above average in terms of an essay D:

well thats why you got writers block, your goals are too diffuse/vague.

try writing an essay plan or sum up key points or something, maybe that will help.

How are you getting writers block on an assessment? I thought you had to be done in 60 minutes?

My friend's tip to writing a short essay is to write down 3 points, and put space between them on the top of your page. Then write down 3 points under each of your main points, then form those points into sentences.

Here's a few other websites with some tips on writing.

Lol its an essay you submit alongside your application.. not an assessment. Anyways, yeah I don't think i'm making the point clear enough

writers block; I cannot think of things to WRITE ABOUT. Telling me "oh outline this or that" doesn't help because I don't know WHAT to outline. I'm drawing blanks on what to say.

For example, one of the topics is "Choose an issue of importance to you - the issue could be personal, school related, local, political, or international in scope- and write an essay in which you explain the significance of that issue to yourself, your family, your community or your generation".

I cannot think of anything that is really important to me which is an "issue". I've been thinking for like a week now and nothing has really come to me that struck me as "oh that'd be good to write a page about".

;/ Did you ever think that maybe you're just not college material?

Meh, i got automatic admittance based on class ranking, almost automatic admittance from my SAT scores so I guess that's about as "college material" as you can get :\

I just don't care passionately about stuff like most others do

Nobody likes doing work, but most people use their goals and aspirations as motivation for them to push on. Go browse some news sites and look for something that interests you enough to write a bunch of sh!t about it. The person evaluating these essays most likely wants to see that you're not a complete dumb@ss. Just do your best, you'll be fine.

While writing I have encountered writer's block several times.
It's quite frustrating to hit a wall like this after a steady flow of ideas.
Good advice is to observe people and places in public for inspiration.
Also, reading people's everyday troubles in magazines, newspapers, and blogs can be very inspiring.
I think the worst thing you could possibly do, though, is to stay inactive completely.
Move forward and do other things, the ideas should come.

Unless you're getting automatic acceptance into a school that someone cares about, well, we don't care.

You're asking for opinions on what to write about for an essay that is personal. Congratulations, you shouldn't be attending college. Heck, you shouldn't even be allowed to use electronic devices.

Congratulations, you can't read. I was asking on ways to overcome writers block, not "give me a good topic to write about". Automatic acceptance to any state college (UT, Texas Tech, A&M, TSU to name a few), i'm sure that's enough for people to care about.

For my essay, I chose that same important issue one. I wrote about the effects of media bias over the course of a few days.

Just pick something you're passionate about and have something to say about it.

Umm, sounds to me like you don't know WHAT TO WRITE ABOUT, not overcoming writer's block. So don't tell me to learn how to read.

Writer's block is when you know a topic, but you don't know how to express your thoughts in words. Which is why you got so many answers about writing down your main points, outlining everything, etc.
