Default 2d games never have widescreen?

I'm curious, why is it that none of these 2d games have widescreen resolution options?

I'll always love a 2d game with beautiful sprites, but every time a 2d MMORPG comes out, there seems to be no support for widescreen monitors.

This forces you to play the game in a small window or stretched, which really takes away from the experience, in my opinion.

A side-scroller MMORPG, for example, would only become more fun if it were on a wider screen.

However, a new side-scroller MMORPG seems to comes out every few months and as far as I can see, none of them can be played in widescreen.

Maple Story, LaTale, Windslayer, Pi Story, Ghost Online, and, most recently, WonderKing... and yet, nobody seems to care.
Dragonica, which isn't 2d, but is a sidescroller, also doesn't have any support for widescreen.

Does every MMORPG gamer use a monitor from 1999?

I think Ragnarok Online was one that had widescreen support, but that's not exactly 2d.

So, am I the only one that cares about this?

Is there some technical issue that would prevent widescreen and standard resolutions to coexist in the same 2d gaming world?

Also, is there some 2d MMORPG that I'm not aware of that actually has widescreen support?
And does Nexon's upcoming Dungeon & Fighter support widescreen? I doubt it.

They don't offer any resolutions at all besides the default.

What they need is to get the people who did Odin Sphere and Muramasa to do an MMO. :x

But then it just might be ridiculously hard.

    What

I agree they really need to upgrade their 2D engines, like Marik said look at Odin Sphere it looks beautiful, also BlazBlue and KoF XII. Both are 2D in high widescreen resolution and they look awesome.

I can forgive Maple but common games that are made in the last 2 years are still working at 640*480/800*600 ?!?!? That resolution was good in mid 90's.

Well, there's a huge difference between F2P and P2P games when it comes to caring about customer satisfaction.

I'm guessing if there was a ever a 2D P2P game (say, Konami decided to make a Castlevania MMORPG or something like that) it would probably have widescreen support.

It's not an excuse, I know, but that's how F2P game devs tend to operate. If they haven't added such an option, it's probably because the game is doing just fine, or because there might be other things that are more critical when it comes to customer satisfaction (hacking, exploiting, lag, etc.)

It is probably harder for 2D games to be in widescreen versus the average resolution, they are pixels, not scalable models.

What 2D games do you guys play? I really want a nice one to play.

I understand this for some games, but games that have been released and developed recently and still don't have widescreen... it's like King_Grunt said, inexcusable.
So many people have widescreen monitors nowadays.

But in Maple Story's case, I have to disagree. If anything, that's the one game that should have widescreen, P2P or not.
While Maple Story doesn't have a subscription fee, it's extremely popular and a large percentage of their playerbase purchases virtual items from the game's cash shop.
A lot of people end up paying much more than the average subscription fee of $12 every month on virtual items.

People who were serious about the game bought many 2x EXP coupons every month, which cost $2 for 4 hours. A lot of people buy 10~20 of these a month, so that's already more than a subscription.
Then factor in premium character customization and clothing, the latter expiring 90 days after purchase...

Then you have the hardcore players, some of whom spend $300+ on Ability Point resets to 'HP wash' for their character, which I won't even get into.

The point is that between this nonsense and all the money from their other games (don't get me started on how costly Mabinogi can be) Nexon makes a shitload of money, and they might even make more overseas. That's why they're able to develop things like Mabinogi Heroes.

I would say that they're making more than some of the more popular P2P games.

They should be able to invest in developing for more resolution options on their game to make players happy.

    Not sure about anyone else..

I prefer my games in windowed mode. Allows for internet surfing while simultaneously playing, heh. Then again that might be why I level so slow

You can even have a maximized wide screen windowed mode which looks like full screen mode but isn't, but I suppose I'm wrong because we're living in 1994 aren't we?

Come on, all these things are VERY easy to program.

Yes, because 2D graphics can't be viewed with higher resolutions... *facepalm*

Come on, don't be so ignorant. They're just lazy, that's why. It can be done, easily, but they're just lazy.
no because it stretches pixels, and make things look unproportional and ugly. stop being so ignorant lulz. i think you're missing the point, of course we know that the resolution can be stretched to widescreen, it's just not supported and as a result, it doesn't look as nice as it should be.
