The word forum comes from Roman society, where the forum was a place in the middle of a city where they had political discussions, arguments, meetings, etc.

People argue because they believe in something; internet forums aren't playgrounds, they're places for discussion.

    true.

but i mean, why can't we have the self control to shut our mouths when the time is right?

    it's pointless to argue online.
using caps and such is pathetic, and if we want to prove ourselves right why can't we do it by having facts.

why do we have to pull out name calling or anything.
are we that bored with our lives or are we that vain thinking we know everything.
No it's just fun to call someone stupid. Why bother looking so deep into it.

Well pretty at first till we hit the dirty ground then we get angry and bicker. Also not everyone thinks the same so really a forum is a breeding ground for arguments.
not thinking the same is a wonderful thing.
i'm just, i suppose, annoyed by people arguing rudely.
there are many other ways to get your point across, why does it have to be so smart-*** like?

    ya know?

the first thing you said sounded like an answer i would have posted.

i would expect the response to be "cool"

and idk, i've been arguing a lot with my bf and it's frustrating.
im super passive agressive so i carry it on, lawl.

but then i read a whole lot of crap on myspace/facebook/forums and such, and it just blows my mind that people actually get a joy out of arguing w/ each other on the internet. i just want to know why.

I like to think of them as on the same scale. You could be having a discussion about what the best MMO is, or you could be having an argument about it. Discussion seems to imply that its more friendly and reasoned while argument seems to imply that it's more dramatic and impassioned.

When stuff gets ridiculous though (i.e., name calling, insults, etc) it's just people satisfying their e-peen, like everyone else said. Even if you take the smartest person and put him against the dumbest troll in the world, eventually the smart guy is going to get pissed enough to sink down to the troll's level

I agree that arguing sucks and people can be really rude...especially the people with huge egos. But just because you argue doesn't mean you are trying to be an *** or hurt ppl's feelings. You just do it cause it's what happens when you don't agree with someone. Like me for example I can be very sarcastic and most of what I type in this forum leads to arguing, but honestly I don't intend to argue at all. I don't wanna hurt people's feelings cause I understand they are human too and they make mistakes just like I do. We both have feelings and I would never call anyone stupid just because they where wrong. But meh I only give that respect to people on the forums....the people who are the subject of the topics are fair game.

    She knows how to party.

    This.

    + The things mentioned before

+ People think that they look intelligent and awesome and powerful and all that crap by making HUGE posts or by turning everything into a discussion/argument which leads to nowhere, while they throw rude words to your head.
