I think that Mario and Sonic are now becoming slightly infamous as they are no longer characters for high quality games but there just to make their companies a few bob.

Infamous, means known widely and usually unfavorably so, it does not necessarily mean evil just can mean evil it's usually used to reference to things that are more famous by name then face or vice-versa.
