well if you think about it, famous game characters pop up for each era/generation.
The younger generations that grew up in the Pokemon/Digimon era (pretty recent) will most likely know Pikachu more.
The older generations of Super Nintendo will probably know/appreciate Mario and Kirby more.
Though nowadays both characters r known due to games that implement both of the characters (ie. Super Smash series)
