When you sign up for a live account, just click at the end that you do not wish to purchase a Gold card or w/e... it will bring you to a screen that says you are eligible for 1 month free. Just did this a couple days ago.

Yeah, you get a free month when you sign up for one of their credit card plans (or add a voucher). Trouble is, it's impossible to opt-out of Xbox Live without calling a relatively pleasant middle Eastern gentleman at customer service.
