Default Tera Online is Pay to Play O.O?

    Source: http://mmoculture.blogspot.com/2009/...y-to-play.html

I was shocked at the announcement that TERA Online will be going P2P... This is an absolute outrage in my opinion. Yes, the game looks good etc, but as a flagship game, why go P2P ? I always said that companies can only afford to go P2P after building up some reputation with other games. NCsoft started out early as a market leader, while Blizzard has had a long history with their games with rich lore. Yes, BlueHole Studio is made up of core members who made Lineage2, but it just doesn't make any sense for a new company. Why must TERA Online, or rather BlueHole Studio dig its own grave ? I am really disappointed and lost for words.

HA! To think companies can be this stupid. CASH SHOPS MAKE MORE MONEY how hard is it to learn that. Look how successful IJJI are.

Im getting Aion and wasnt even looking at this game much anyways. I normally play p2p titles but not when i know they are going to shoot themselves in the foot like this.

Meh, who knows. Maybe it'll go F2P some day, like RFO and Archlord.

I laughed a little, tera will fail like no tomorrow with a p2p model.

RFO and Archlord doesn't look good like this one, and you can't wait for a P2P game becomes F2P 'cause you will die

I think it would have done better as B2P instead of P2P, but I doubt it'd survive with either, but you never know.

I just hope this doesn't set an example for other "next gen" mmo's that we're all eagerly anticipating, if it does, they may try the same thing.

By then we'll probably have C9 and/or Mabinogi Heroes and not care. xD

Tera has the potential to be a good P2P game.

Thats why there would be "Drama"
    .
wowow, let me get this straight. Only well known companies with a history of p2p games have the divine right to publish p2p games, whereas new developpers should hypothetically be sued if they attempted to go p2p?

Lets apply your theory on retail games. only known developpers like blizzard, EA, Bioware, ... are "allowed" to ask money for their games, whereas new (indie) developpers have to distribute their products for free at first untill they have a solid reputation? What kind of logic is this? I'll tell you, a straight dive to bankrupcy

If TERA ultimately is a triple A title with an investment of millions of dollars into it, it is only logical they opt for P2P subscription, as they need to compensate much more than general f2p games. The succes of the business model depends on the succes of the game in general. If TERA offers what you can get in other quality MMORPG's nowadays, p2p is perfectly justified.

No offense, but what you brought up as an "argument" is completely ridiculous and thought of way out of context. Subscriptions are a matter of economical efficiency in relation to the spent budget to develop the game, it's not based on a completely arbitrary "reputation" system among developpers ...

as an edit, i would like to destroy your argument completely by giving a few western developpers. Turbine Entertainement's first MMORPG project was pay to play from the very start, and every project afterwards as well. Ranging from Asherons Call to Dungeons and Dragons online to Lord of the Rings online. All were p2p from the beginning. Blizzards first MMORPG was p2p from day 1. Hell, NCSOFT's first MMORPG (Lineage the blood Plegde) was p2p from the start.
Neither of these developpers had any sort of "reputation" when they released their mmorpg's ...

Hmm if you put it like that it does sound kinda silly.....

I would be all for it being P2P if it was promoted properly. NCSOFT being a big company like they are already went about promoting their game properly.

But HanGame are making it F2P and not many people except players that know about the foreign scene really know about the game. Im not one for playing games just because they have a huge playerbase but unless this is B2P as well i dont see it getting a lot of players.

Think about this, Tera will release in 2010, what other games will be released in 2010?

Now think about the marketing, what people want, and what people will play, what people will pay for, and how many people are willing to pay and play Tera over other titles which will be 200% better then another Korean grinder with pretty graphics, which we all know that's how every game from Korea is and Tera is no different.

Aion, Guild Wars 2, World of Warcraft Cataclysm, Diablo 3, SC2 all these titles are expected to be released in 2010, and they all have millions, upon millions of people FAN base, SC has what, a Chinese/Korean National completions and even its own TV channel.

P2P will not work with Tera, why because the game can not compete it today's market, most of them are struggling, good example is Dungens and Dragons Online, Warhammer Online, and many other titles are struggling to keep there player base.

    So What do you think?

0.0 as a first game it SHOULD have been F2P with cash shop at least, to test the world's reaction to their game. then if they had started making more amazing titles and gone P2P it would be understandable. but i mean, WTF? huxley, C9(i think?) and Dragon's Nest(i THINK) are all F2P with cash shop. then again, my pocket money is restricted lol, so thats my own opinion....

Exactly a new P2P title will not survive in 2010. I had never even heard of the game until recently and thats cause i use an mmorpg forum daily. Making a P2P game means your in a whole new market. A market dominated by a lot of other big brand mmorpgs and of course the horror to every p2p company which is WoW.

Look i dont want to turn this into an Aion thread but im going to be honest with you all. If Aion was not being published by NCSOFT it would not have been hyped as much as it has been yes its a good game but looking at video's from Tera so is that. Heck if you switched both companies around and NCSOFT was hosting Tera i bet Tera would be in the same place as Aion is right now.

I love how eveyone thinks WoW = best game ever, every single person who plays/ed WoW compares EVERY SINGLE ****ING GAME to WoW, it's getting really annoying. If ya'll remember right, WoW was complete shit when it came out, just as many bugs as Warhammer, true Warhammer sucks but still. As years progress WoW got better and better, content wise atleast, Aion isn't even out yet and has no content so how can you compare the 2 games really?

Aion and WoW are 2 different games, every single WoW player thinks that all games that comes out "stole" ideas from WoW, you all actually think WoW didn't steal ideas from other games hmm?

If you like WoW, stick to WoW, if you like Aion, stick to Aion. Now everyone thinks Tera isn't good enough to be a P2P game, so tell me, what kind of game is considered to be P2P? So did Tera steal ideas from WoW also?

I probably didn't make any sense since I haven't gone to bed yet and a little on edge but whatever.

    No.

Everyone knows WoW is the most successful mmorpg ever. Theres a difference between liking something and trying to ignore facts because you hate something.

I don't care if Tera is going F2P or P2P, most of my time is going to Aion until FFXIV or Blade and Soul comes out. Tera gameplay wise is different but not really my style, that's MY opinion.

I wouldn't mind subbing this if it was like 5 pounds, it does actually look like a lot of fun.

    Or buy to play.

I'm sure you guys would qq a lot more about unbalanced cash shop then p2p.

I don't really like P2Ping for asian games, there is something about them that makes them not worth the money.
Although this looks rather fun, I think a decent F2P release would of done wonders for it.
