Just get a group of friends and play. The community isn't the best but there are quite a bit of nice people that will help you out.

Not a lot of the people will like to help out new comers. Like when it was my first game I just asked:

"Hey guys, what items would you recommend for Blacksmith?"

And the reply was:

"Just shut the **** up and play."

But when playing with friends and family, it was lots of fun.

Its just like DotA, only with a few new features, new maps, some new characters, and polished.

Just try it and if you don't like it than never play again.

Anyways if you've never played or liked DotA there is really no reason to play this game.
They tell you nothing on how to play and expect you to somehow figure it all out by yourself. I think there is a wiki or something? But no link to that ingame or any sort of tutorial.
You have no idea what the objective is, what the difference is between classes, what the basic controls are. Quite sad if you ask me.
But, if you like DotA, then play it. It's the closest thing to DotA from what I hear.
But if you are looking for something that is fun and haven't played or don't like DotA, then this game will only waste 30 minutes of your life.
But seriously. eBay the beta key, I bet it'll bring in some $$.

ACTUALLY, I absolutely hate dota, but I love playing HoN. The gfx are obv big improvment from WC3 and the game play is smoother. Standalone= more features that normal dota. So I think its a big improvement. If you dont like dota, give it a try anyway you might like it. If you haven't played dota, once again- try it. Youll figure out how to play the game in a couple games.
