Since so many children grow up in environments where there is a lack of focus on empathy, I agree, lessons like those should really be mandatory in education for children. Otherwise, they are risking to grow up to be egocentric persons.

    Edit:
This reminds me of one my absolute favourite songs: "The Sound Of Silence" by Simon and Garfunkel. It is a song that portrays how there is a lack of empathy in society and that is a tragedy.

I quote the lyrics for anyone interested (it is actually quite beautiful):

    "Hello darkness, my old friend
I've come to talk with you again
    Because a vision softly creeping
Left its seeds while I was sleeping
And the vision that was planted in my brain
    Still remains
    Within the sound of silence

In restless dreams I walked alone
    Narrow streets of cobblestone
Beneath the halo of a street lamp
I turned my collar to the cold and damp
When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of a neon light
    That split the night
And touched the sound of silence

And in the naked light I saw
    Ten thousand people, maybe more
    People talking without speaking
    People hearing without listening
People writing songs that voices never share
    And no one deared
    Disturb the sound of silence

"Fools," said I, "you do not know
    Silence like a cancer grows
Hear my words that I might teach you
Take my arms that I might reach you"
But my words like silent raindrops fell
    And echoed
    In the wells of silence

And the people bowed and prayed
To the neon god they made
And the sign flashed out its warning
In the words that it was forming
And the signs said the words of the prophets
Are written on the subway walls
    And tenement halls
And whispered in the sounds of silence "

    USA needs the following:

    1. Teachers ~ We need better teachers
    2. Schools ~ Possibly a longer school year
    3. More responsible parents
    4. Better role models for the youth
    5. More responsible students

Teachers here where I live care about discplining and rules more than teaching and about their status. "Hey Mr.Smith!" "It's DR.Smith, I'm giving you a referral for disrespecting an administrator. I'm not saying we shouldn't follow rules, but the teachers seem like they really don't care, and that they've just given up. If they started to show that they did, then the students would care.

I understand they're getting paid to just teach, not form even the tiniest bond with the students, but it would be better if they cared like that teacher.

There are people here who dread school because teachers are such assholes do the most unconditional shit.

My religion teacher is like that this year (a new teacher btw)... go in, sit down, tell us to fill our own workbook (note: RELIGION WORKBOOK, there is no way of actually knowing we are right without discussing it), while she sits down on her lazy arse and tells us what to do.

I let her know the hard way I won't obey her, just because how she reacts. If she looked last year at the teacher we had, she'd know we'd actually listen and work.
