Default Why are Koreans so hardcore at gaming?

I mean a lot of them can stay up till like days to play online games and I always wonder how they endured the grind. I mean in different countries we would say that "OOOO Maplestory is so grindy and stuff" but in Korea the grindsystem is like normal to them.

I mean a lot of them don't sleep and spent like thousands of dollar in Internet cafe each months.

Don't some of them farm gold for a living or something?
    Or is that just China?

I don't know, like the other guy said, might not be much else to do in Korea. I mean, it's Korea.

    O yeah...

    But isn't South Korea a semi-democratic country?

I believe that Korean MMOs are grindy in order to bring longevity into the game. Either with the intention to produce cash or to encourage building a social atmosphere between other players. After all, if you require x amount of time in order to get somewhere, it is highly likely that even the most introverted and anti-social of people will eventually have a little compulsion to start talking to other players. In the long term, social relationships hopefully build and the player builds sentimental value over enjoying it with other people. For video game companies, this translates into profit as emotional attachment means more playtime which enables them to make more money off of monthly fees or encourages the player to buy items either as a form of endearment to another player or to show their sense of identity among their friends.

How do they keep themselves from falling asleep?

They aren't that grindy. Exp rates in KR servers are way higher than exp rates here. People don't play 24/7, that's just a stereotype. There's only a few that do and those people are like prof. gamers; probably in the pro league for said game.

Most just pop in to a net cafe; pay like $5 to use a really good computer and play that way. They don't buy the games or subs or anything; just the fee for using the computer. And not all of them use it for gaming either =/

...just a minor user who live in Korea, and born in Korea.
as I see here, boys here make games as their unique gossip subject.
for example, "I met a whole newbie on this game, and he sucks.." or so.

have you heard of PCrooms in Korea?
they are everywhere. it's not any exag though I say 1/20 the city is PCrooms.
you might not understand why they spend money and time in this mean place,
but when you use this place for once, you'll understand everything.

Try ordering some snacks while playing computer in PCroom.
I'm sure you'll stay there for like... at least 24 hours.
    this is called "ADDICTION"

as I said, I'm just a minor user who live in Korea, and born in Korea...

There is also a gaming stadium in Korea, and a e-games sports league. The stadium looks nice too, where various gaming events are held almost daily. Beat that.

I'm just a minor user who live in Korea, and born in Korea...

Korean culture probably just pushes people harder. Never been to Korea so I can't really say.

Koreans are one of the best strategy and mmo gamers I have ever played with. I lost to a Korean in the Semi- Finals of Samsung World Cyber Games of 2001. Damn, I thought I was already a Demon in StarCraft Brood War but he was the Diablo.

Because they're used to living in a competitive society where the highest achievement is victory over the opposition?
