It allows you to modify your Wii in a way that allows it to run special applications.
As Oister mentioned it can make your Wii play DvD's.
However its also used for installing backup launchers that allow you to play burnt games, as well as playing Wiiware games.
Its like asking how many of you smoke weed?
Its just a question...that leads to discussion.

I seems HIGHLY uncommon for people to add a homebrew channel in and not use it for that sole purpose.
Originally you want free games, then eventually you add a DvD Player, etc.
