Default FF XI (yeah I know it isnt f2p)

But what I am wondering on the other hand is if I just pick the game up and, which is the best, most populated server. I don't want to end up paying for a game and get a decent character, only to find out that the server is dead, and I should have been on a different one the whole time. I am on the Ragnarok server, is that one good? Also, Is there any PVP in the game and how does it work? Because I am now looking for a p2p game, because I am tired of all these Pay5000$2Win games, or the Pay250$amonth2evenlevelorplaythegame, models. So me and my girl think that we might have found a winner with FFXI. Her computer cant run AION, and we are tired of WoW, and EQ and EQ2 IMO are worta dead to the world of MMO's. So unless someone has a better p2p game, shout it out, also please let me know ahead of time if they have a Free Trial. If not I think that we are going to stick with our choice, I just want to know about those questions. Oh, one more thing that I just thought of, Confirm or Deny, FFXI is shutting down come 2010?

FFXI isn't closing down, I could imagine the population will take a punch when the XIV comes out but the game will still stay up.
I personnally wouldn't recommend the game, don't expect it to be anything like Final Fantasy as the name has just been slapped on to attact fans.

PVP is fairly unimportant in FFXI, not a lot of people do it, but there are those who do. There's a couple of game modes and even a mode where you capture a monster to fight against other people's monsters.

Those who enjoy PVPing often probably won't enjoy FFXI, while there are the ways and means, it's not something a lot of players actually do.

As for servers, well, all severs are more or less the same, there are a few with higher populations than others, such as Asura or Odin. Asura is usually regarded as a good server, personally I play on Sylph, it's not bad, could do with a few more people, but, meh. Merging some servers together really wouldn't hurt and would probably improve the game.

I enjoy FFXI, however, you need to have patience to play it, you're not going to suceed if you expect everything to come to you, you have to work and stick at it. FFXI is entirely party based, you need to be able to work well in a group and have the patience to wait for one. This puts most people off, as for some reason people see "Wait for a party" and somehow think they have to stand next to a wall all day with a party flag up, while you may do there, there are a lot of side activities you can be doing especially in the lower levels where it's still very possible to solo. (As to why people wait in Valkurm when they could be soloing and seeking in the two adjoining areas I don't know, but, it's a common complaint.)

There's a lot in the game, the craft system is massive, there's side activities like gardening, chocobo raising, around 5 series of storyline missions, a whole bunch of quests and all that stuff. (Admittedly this is all fairly standard, but, it's good to know.)

If you have the time, it's a good game, if you're impatient and expect instant gratification, then perhaps not.

As for closing down in 2010. Near impossible, I mean they still have Tetra Master up, and nobody plays that.
And if the cloud bursts, thunder in your ear.

You shout and no one seems to hear.

First of all, Final Fantasy XI does deserve the FF title. The story comes out once you do Chains of Promathia. Anyone who has finished CoP knows that FFXI has a storyline that can compete with console FF titles.

But yes you need to work for everything in the game. It takes time, and you will need a good linkshell (guild) and friends to advance.
It's way easier to level nowadays with the level sync and Fields of Valor system.
The community is elitist so be prepared for it. Read up on everything on the forums and the wiki. People expect and appreciate well informed players.

    Beginner Guide:
    http://wiki.ffxiclopedia.org/wiki/User:Evyen/FFXIguide

Use FFXIclopedia for everything mostly, has all the info on the game.

As for server population, take a look at FFXIAH.com and look at the economic index. The top servers are also the populated ones.

And yes there is so much content you will most likely never finish it all. I've been playing 1.5 years so far and have only finished two major expansions. Chains of Promathia took my static group over a year to complete since we only did the missions during the weekend.
So yes there is a ton to do and I love the game to bits. Levelling has become a lot easier in the last few months and if you chose an often needed job like Paladin, Red Mage or Bard you'll be guaranteed an invite. ^_^
