    Default Star Trek Online

So who is gonna try Star Trek Online? The servers open up on January 31st (29th if you preorder plus you get in the beta 12th-26th of Jan.)

It sounds alot like Eve Online but alot more action oriented rather than the player run economy style that Eve has. Space combat in it sounds like its gonna be easy to learn hard to master, alot more than just pressing 1,2,3,4,5,etc. Have to maneuver your ship to get in a better firing position or to keep your enemy from hitting the side of your ship which has lost shields. You can reroute power from different systems in order to increase weapon effectiveness, power shields, boost of speed etc. Ground combat sounds like it plays alot like a 3rd person shooter. Looks to be good, might just preorder the Collectors Edition. Would be a first for me for mmos.

    http://www.gamestop.com/Catalog/Prod...oduct_id=75981

Now all I have to do is decide if I want the exclusive trademark ship of the Star Trek series (gamestop) or the exclusive Borg officer (Amazon)...hmm.

Just found out that getting it from Best Buy nets you 2 exclusive pet, one for Klingons and one for the Federation. So many choices...maybe I should just spend $180 for 1 collectors edition and 2 standard, one for each preorder bonus...=\

I was initially looking at getting the game before release, but with how much Cryptic dropped the ball on Champions Online I am now definentally waiting till after release to even start looking at the game.

Dunno why people don't like Champions. The only thing I didn't like about it is that there are too few zones.

Meh, my birthday is in January, so, I might buy it, given I have the money spare.

I guess I am in the minority then and don't care about game balance, I just care if I am having fun. So what if the powers I chose are substandard, I am having fun. Also, I never had issues with running the game/crappy performance so...*shrugs*. Lack of content is the main thing but...that kinda comes with the territory. Most mmos have very little content in the first 6 months or so. Expecting otherwise is sure to kill the game for you.

I'm just loving how people are saying Star Trek Online sucks because Champions Online sucks...

That is absolutely PERFECT logic. Because obviously, Cryptic saw how much negative feedback they got from Champions Online (much of which I believe is pretty silly; lack of content for a brand new mmo? That's to be expected.) and they so very much want that same reception for Star Trek Online.

Perfect example of this, only backwards is Rare. Before xbox, Rare made good games, everybody (xbox fans I mean) cheered when Microsoft bought out Rare thinking that new, quality games like Banjo Kazooie and Conkers would become xbox exclusives. Well, what did xbox get, Grabbed by the Ghoulies, Kameo, Viva Pinata (won't lie, this one was actually pretty decent-ish), and a port of Conkers. Company went from making quality gold to craptacular games in the span of a single game.

I was skeptical about this game for a long time because it looked like it was going to go to development hell...but after reading a lot of features on it, it seems like its shaping up to be pretty good.

Still, I'm more excited about this as a huge Star Trek fan than I am as a gamer. I might wait 1-2 months to see if it gets a good reception before I try it.

    Rare =/= Cryptic

and you're forgetting the Bill Roper factor.

LeDave, Star Trek online is gonna have killer ship combat which TOR will not. The ground combat in Star Trek is going to be more tactical while the combat in TOR will be alot more action oriented. That said, I am still probably going to get TOR when it comes out...probably. Considering its not a true mmo, more akin to the pve in Guild Wars, and it has a monthly fee, makes me go hmm...is it really worth it? What it boils down to is, do you want ground combat to be the focus or ship combat? Also, in Star Trek Online, it is impossible to do a quest by yourself (technically), if you don't want to play with other players you can, but you will still be forced to take some npc members of your ship with you when you beam down to planets for ground missions I believe. So if you want to feel like a one man army, TOR is the way to go.

And yea, Rare sucks since Microsoft bought em, the only good thing they have made is Viva Pinata. (I am a sucker for god, building, tycoon, etc type games)

As I said above, they are completely different play styles. One is more tactical and team oriented, the other is more action oriented and solo friendly. Also, I have heard rumors that TOR might be an mmo more akin to Guild Wars...instanced missions/exploration areas, town = giant chat room + resupply/trade. Though, thats just a rumor so take it as you will. Also, Star Wars TOR still has no release date, wouldn't be surprised if its still not out Q3 this year. Star Trek comes out in less than 2 months. Also...real star trek fans? Is there an age limit on liking Star Trek now? "No, sorry your too young, your not allowed to like Star Trek." =\

nah most star trek fans are older..really. Some of you like star trek right now too but it was outdated for the younger people. So the new generation dont like star trek like the generation befor ^^

and nah. Its just a rumor. It will be not like GW trust me

I don't know where you get the idea that most Star Trek fans are older. Just because its an older franchise? Its not that much older than Star Wars (Star Wars being a mere 11 years younger, not too much when talking about media properties), it just isn't as main stream. Also don't forget, the new Star Trek movie, that got a great deal of the young generation into Star Trek. Star Wars has games on its side to build its fan base, but Star Trek has alot more tv shows and movies (which the tv shows btw, you can almost always find playing on some channel, I know one channel, can't remember it right now though I think it might be Spike, still airs 4-5 hours of Star Trek a day). Oh, and another Star Trek movie is coming out in 2011.

its all about statistics my friend ^^
a Phaser isnt that cool. A laser sword is cool Dont wanna fight with you. Just use google and look around the net. Star Wars have a bigger community (yeah you are right - gaming) + Bioware is much better than cryp.
I am not a star trek fan but i still want to test the game.

Nothing I have seen in TOR so far has completely wowed me. Read a couple hands on articles of the game, most just said its your typical quest grinding mmo albeit with higher production values and the Star Wars IP. Oh, and plenty of people have played Star Trek Online. You do know it has been in cb for a while now right?

mkay...than i wasnt accepted. But there is a playable version of star wars too (not for the public but its playable). The quests are really different and there is more action + ways to react. Ship war will be come with addon.
I just think star wars will win because it has mor things to do + all npc have voices (first mmorpg with full voice) + Bioware = epic rpg company.

Look at champion right now. Game is ok but cryp needs to do more than just release a game and than do nothing ^^

How is there more to do in TOR than STO? What gameplay features does TOR have that STO doesn't? And yes like I said, they will probably add space combat to TOR later, but it will probably be little more than dog fighting. Thats how almost every single Star Wars flight game is, futuristic dog fights. The full voice thing, while cool and I commend Bioware for that, doesn't add a whole lot to the game. More action is just your opinion, its not definitive. Ways to react...uhh, you mean conversations I am guessing? Well yea, thats Bioware's speciality, deep conversation paths.

action scenes too. They added a lot of action scenes to make a better feeling for the player (in some situations) and the combat system is great too (nice dynamic). But hey lets finish our discussion. We will see. I will play star trek when i get into the beta and later star wars.

yup i know that but its a little bit different (dynaaamic ). For example the smuggler class (hide and shoot and so on). Its a normal combat system with some new features + fast based = action
