You just didn't understand it.
The movie was genius. So many things that you said just prove you didn't get it.
It wasn't meant to be an action flick, the guy wasn't meant to look heroic; apparantly this is beyond you.

Much simpler to say.
Whatever brutzer says is useless in this discussion.

I personally enjoyed it quite alot, that's just me though.
The only thing that buggered me is we never got to see the FULL monster flat out in your face. :/

If you'd bothered to listen to what J.J. Abrams and Matt Reeves said, and followed the viral campaign, you'd know it wasn't an alien.
It was an undiscovered animal that was awakened by the drilling company that Rob eventually was transferring to Japan to work for.
At the end, you see something fall in the ocean. The camera dates this as before the monster attack. The story goes that whilst salvaging the satellite that fell in the ocean, the animal was awakened, destroyed the off-shore rig (As you can see in one of the viral trailers you didn't bother to watch) and happened to make shore in New York City.
The movie was a symbolic depiction of how people of this generation would theoretically experience a disaster. If anything, it was an allegory of modern-day events like September the 11th, and you could certainly draw parallels.
It was a tale of how a story about how two things collided, both were terrified of one another, and that's what happened.
The creature was an infant suffering from seperation anxiety, that's why it was lashing out. It wasn't some kind of evil creature bent on destruction.
It was meant to express what happens when something that's alone and scared shows up in the middle of something like civilisation.
As J.J. Abrams said, watch an elephant go on a rampage and it's one of the most destructive things there is, but it's not because it's evil; it's because it's afraid.
It was about a huge animal, awakened by chance, scared and in a place that it never knew existed. Likewise for the people.
The animal wasn't an alien, and as for there being no plot; there was a year's worth of carefully strategised marketing, viral and otherwise, that revealed pieces of the plot. This is further detailed in the manga; Cloverfield/Kishin.
So MY suggestion would be that you go do the research.
You didn't get it. YOU went in, like everyone else, expecting a monster movie that you would turn your brain off to and enjoy. It's not for you, so do the decent thing and admit you didn't pay enough attention to appreciate the genius of it.
Don't sit there saying things that are factually untrue, like: "There's no plot.". There's more plot behind it than most American action flicks.
What amazes me is how Brutzer was unbanned.
What ego?
In all honesty, man, what ego? You made claims about the movie that were incorrect. You don't like it? Totally subjective, fine, but you cannot sit there saying you "got it" when your general overview of the movie involves "aliens", of which there absolutely were none, on top of you totally not understanding the point of the movie.
I'm not saying you didn't get it to diss you, your opinion of it suggests you didn't get it.
Oh please "What ego?" really? Even if I was wrong which I'm not saying I am....you are just the type of person who loves to gloat. And uuh alien can also define something that is strange or foreign. Perhaps I meant anything that is strange or foreign! I mean come on....
And sure I was a little general and I'll admit that but wow when you say you have no ego that's just amazing.
Hmm and your explanation of the movie was nice and thank you for that. But who would honestly think of all that while watching Cloverfield? Well sure maybe some who already knew what the movie was suppose to represent before they watched it and understood it while they where watching, or someone who just guessed at the meaning, or someone who was confused by the movie and researched it after.
But again my point is that it's all on opinion. And my opinion is that the movie is ok but it's not great. I mean who would really run around with a small camera and video tape everything around him as the world literally crumbles around him? That man would have to be one of the dumbest people or one of the craziest. When you are in danger you run from the danger, you don't go around recording it. And you don't have to be a genius to understand that people will panic.....but again this is just a movie! Not a documentary on the human psyche or human reaction to large scale chaos.
She knows how to party.
Dude, don't bring this to the table, please. This isn't about me, so don't make it about me.
Secondly, you know as well as I do that you did not mean "alien" in the very loose sense. You meant out-of-space alien, and you were wrong.
"Perhaps I meant...", you didn't. I said there were no aliens and you disagreed.
I didn't know all that before watching the movie, I still thought it was genius. Why do you want another monster that's 100% explained? Part of the mystery of life is finding things that make us go: "Well I'll be f*cked if I know what that is!". You don't need answers to EVERYTHING. I've seen enougn Godzilla, Mothra and Rodan movies to stomach another: "Oh it was radiation!" excuse.
Stop being so literal about it, man. This is where you're just picking at it for no reason.
"Who would video tape it? You'd have to be dumb.". If you want realism, don't go watch a movie about a monster attacking New York City. If he didn't carry it with him, we'd have had no movie. Some things HAVE to be unrealistic because that's what movies ARE. Him carrying the camera when anyone else wouldn't have is NOT a point against the movie, or at least it shouldn't be. Why? Because you're looking at it the wrong way. It's not necessarily meant to be "Oh hey, I'm a dude with a camera.". It's meant to give the feeling of being there YOURSELF. The only other way they could've done that is by making it first-person, like Doom. Would that have been better? No.
You're saying "It's just a movie!" while complaining about realism. You don't seem to have grasped or appreciated what they did with this movie, and that is my original point.
It has nothing to do with ego, I have no issue with you and if you were insulted by anything I said, then I apologise; it wasn't intentional. The fact is, though, you simply didn't get this movie. It wasn't for you. If you did, I wouldn't be explaining this. This isn't about "I thought it wasn't good.", it's about you not getting it. You're not wrong for disliking it, you're wrong in your judgement of its purpose.
If you got what it was trying to do and still didn't like it, fine, but you judged it upon a cocky and misguided interpretation of it.
Next time, don't fly off the handle. I wasn't dissing you, so don't go around making this about my "ego", or creating threads aimed at me. It's just not called for.
Reputation: 30Let me ask you a question. Did you enjoy Transformers 2?
I'm not offended honestly. I can take all kinds of opinions. But Cloverfield just didn't have enough story for me. The aliens destroying New York was nice and the guy doing stupid shit to be a hero was nice and the ending was nice but the movie in general was a mess. The movie all together was one big mess to me.
Sure not a lot of movies do it but some bad movies do do it. Like Blair Witch for example and that Paranormal Activity movie (I haven't watched it yet but by what I've seen through commercials and have heard from others who have seen it, I'm making my own logical guess of it.).
And no I like to guess with movies but unlike most horror movies or action movies you are guessing who the killer is and not what the killer is. Or why is the killer killing these people? I'm just used to the guess work being about people and not a giant alien monster. With a giant alien monster I come to expect a nice informative explanation of what kind of monster it is and why the monster is attacking. But like I've said in a few posts back is that I haven't watched the movie in a while. This discussion of the movie has made me want to watch it again.Norrin has sparked my interest!
Thanks for your opinion Norrin. I'm really not trying to pick at you or anything I just feel a different way. What really ticked me off is the way you said that "You don't like the movie that must mean you don't understand it.", that's like saying "Because you don't agree with me you must be wrong.". You really need to try and be more graceful being a Mod and all. You need to set a good example. ^^
Dx Best movie ever = The Suicide Club!!!!
