By the way, I think I'm the only person I know who seems to think The Expendables will be phenomenal (If it's shit, I'm going to be disappointed) as an action movie.

I may trip down to Portsmouth and see it with you just so that I either have someone to praise it with, or someone to ***** about it with.

im definately going to see avatar in 3d, even if i have to go on my own. im not sure about the hype but reading this thread has made me even more determined. i know its not going to be rubbish, and at the very least its going to be an awesome fx movie.


i hope expendables does turn out to be great as well. its a bit of a minefield doing an ensemble old school action film, but if it doesnt take itself too seriously and the action is good without being stupid then its set to be a cult classic.

anyways the movie was pretty epic. i had no problems with the acting. it did have the human element of how we act. no matter how you deny it, in that movie thats how we would act.

I actually liked the characters, the well crafted action scenes and the fact I was never bored once during the movie which like I said has never happened to me even during the best movies.

Moon, for me.

Sam Rockwell carried that movie on his own (Literally) and all the groundbreaking, memorable art in Avatar won't top the human element that he brought to that role.

Avatar is an amazing piece of art, but a great movie? Movie of the year? No.

Moon, Inglourious Basterds, Anti-Christ and Up are all ahead of it.

Sure, the visual effects should never be so bad that they take away a significant part of immersion from the movie. However, during the past decades, there have been plenty of "good" movies with "bad" technology that were still able to deliver a strong immersion. Visuals are far from the most important aspect of a movie, even for a sci-fi one. "2001: A Space Odyssey" (1968) is a good example of that you don't need stunning modern effects to create a good sci-fi movie.

Yea, I have heard of Disney's Fantasia.

What movie has not been based off something else since we started capturing stories on celluloid?

For as much as we love stories what we love more is how they are told. Avatar not only gives us Cameron's spin on fusing "Call Me Joe" with "Dances with Wolves" but it does so in a way that only movies can, with great acting performances and stunning visuals.

If you can't suspend enough disbelief to check in as a visitor to Pandora for a 3 hour tour, not sure why you go to movies.

It was TOO cliched and too predictable for me. The fact that it was cliched isn't necessarily the bad thing.

The bad thing is that most of us saw the end coming from not long after the movie started. If that's the kind of filmmaking we're getting, then you're right; not sure why I go to the movies.

I'll let James Cameron off because it was good, not bad, just alright. On top of that, it was everything it's been hyped as in the visual sense. It's style over substance, is all.
