Reputation: 11I find WoW so immensly popular due to the end-game. No game has so much to do when you cap.

Reputation: 11To be fair, Ultima Online is not really divided into mid-game and end-game. The whole thing is just merged together to form a "game". This can be considered either no end-game or infinite end-game. UO is really the only MMO IMO that has been able to accomplish this so far. This is largely due to it also being the most sandbox out of any mmo that has ever been released to date. I will say that UO at its prime was by FAR the MMO that took the longest to get bored of. UO took me 3 years to get bored of it, while right under that was probably Anarchy Online and Lineage 2 which both took about 6 months to get bored of, and then every other mmo I have gotten bored in under 6 months including WoW.
Reputation: 28I think low system requirements are a good way to make an mmo popular. Look at Maplestory and Runescape. Anyone with a working computer and a graphics card with atleast 50 MB can run them. I was playing WoW with an integrated graphics card and 512 RAM.
Reputation: 16WoW rocks that's why it's so popular.
The main reason why people are addicted to WOW is mainly because of the lore. The game is fairly 12+ years old with a long story behind it. Those who fell in love with the storyline get into WOW and love it because they continue the lore as the game continues. Plus, many people who don't know much of the lore and just start playing WOW play it because it is simple like OP said.
I personally loved the Warcraft lore but hated the lore in World of Warcraft. WoW pretty much butchered the lore...for one thing, they literally revived a dead character with the excuse that he was just sleeping.
I'd say WoW's popularity stems from the game being made by Blizzard. That's all that needs to be said.
