    Mass Effect 1 was one of the best sci-fi RPGs ever made.

    Mass Effect 2 should be no worse.

    No one knows yet, but your major choices carry through, i.e. saving the Rachni, or making Garrus a good guy or a mean guy, etc,

    If you just make a new game on Mass Effect 2 without importing your save game, you will simply have the canon choices for ME1.

    I have ME1 for the 360, but I decided to preorder ME2 on Steam.

    Meaning I have to play through ME1 on the PC now in 5 days D:

    Don't bother with side quests - most probably won't influence your game in the sequel. That oughta shave off a few hours of playtime

    I'd do the companion side quests, too. Those are definitely going to carry over.

    Knowing Bioware I would take the time to do as much of the side quests as possible since they do lead to the deaths or hatred/like of some of the minor side characters. If they take a larger stance in 2, than it could play to some interesting plot twists.
