Mercutio is, to me, what made R&J. He foreshadows pretty much every event, made it somewhat funny in most areas, and, like needed, cursed both families for being such douches.
People claim that he had a homosexual attraction to Romeo, but I doubt that, he's just a very close friend to Romeo who isn't afraid to tell him the truth about all these girls that he's going through.
