Curling is the only winter sport.
Reputation: 785So you're judging their performances... Based on their hair?
Funtip, Moa: if you don't know what you're talking about, then don't say anything at all.
Not my sport. But hey, this is pretty interesting.
I'm kind of envious though, these guys are doing 4 spins...I can't even skate...and I'm from Massachusetts....thats embarassing.

In a nutshell, though, every element they do in a program can be worth so many points based on how well they execute it. It can be as simple as how many rotations they do in the air, or how deep their edges were in their footwork program, etc.
Even their "showmanship" is objectively identified by how much on time they are with their music.
Case in point: Johnny Weir by far performed the best as a performer in the Free Skate, and even got a standing ovation. However, he was scored well because technically and objectively his program was not difficult enough to attain high points. Things like more difficult transitions are given more points in the scoring system, and Weir's transitions, although beautiful to behold, were simplistic.
The old system was where each judge would give two scores: one for "technical" ability and one for "artistic" ability. Now, very few if any points are given for artistry since the new systems believes that simply performing elements well to music is artistic enough.
lol not my cup of tea
