    Default How harmful is smoking?

I just started smoking not too long ago, and I feel a bit bleh. Like my stomach is just empty and my throat is pretty dry too. Not sure if this is normal, since I am a first time smoker.

Anyway, I was curious just how harmful can smoking be long term? If I do not want to quit, could I just limit myself to maybe 1 cigerette a week (I have self-control, so this is pretty possible).

Lung Cancer, Emphysema are not so serious illnesses caused by smoking.

Trust me, that's harder than you think. My mom used to smoke and it took her a lot of time and pressure to stop. Smoking is one of the worst things to do. It can ruin your life and it can affect other people's lives.
The 'bleh' feeling will, according to my mother, only get worse. Eventually, you might even have breathing issues.
My tip of the day: Stop smoking while you can.

Quitting right now would be no problem for me. People keep saying that cigarettes will get you addicted on the first one. I feel no addiction or whatever. So, I'll probably quit if I am tempted again.

Not only to relieve stress, but I wanted to see how hard it is to really quit with smoking. Call me dumb and risky, but I like to experience things first-hand.

Why don't you get a stressball or go to a therapist? It's easier, cheapier and healthier.

Stressballs don't work for me, really.

I've had a therapist for 2 years of my life and going back would just be pointless. :/

I know it sounds weird, but smoking will only give you more stress. My mom is so much more relaxed now.

I was smoking for 5 long years, i have asthma too.
I was coughing every day, Now i didnt cough for half year, didnt touch a cig a whole half year and i feel so great, its still hard, the coffee in the morning with a sig, wow, my dream haha.
I was in my base, and my friend gave me a book, how to quit smoking by elen kar i think, I had something little to push me, and the book helped me.
I'm not saying quit, I'm saying live your life the way you want to, i'm pretty sure i will come back smoking in 2 years, because in the army i get 100$ a month, so i cant "afford" the cig, when i will have money in 2 years, its probably will go most of it to cig's, my girl friend is smoking too, its so freaking hard to watch her smoke
And yes i was chewing my nails when i was smoking, now i dont touch them = stress..

Pwet is wrong, the first 4 years are for fun a freaking "hobby", after that its an addiction.

Limiting yourself for a 1 in a day is more painfull then smoking 10 a day, because your body got used to the drug, when you smoke your last cig, your drug comes out slowly and you need more of the drug, more and more by the time is passing, 1 a day is more stressfull and killing.. in my opinion.

Lung cancer, the cancer that kills the most, for each 5 people dying, 1 of them is because of cigarettes

You should be able to quit fairly easily in the first 1-3 months, but if you go beyond that, you're pretty much toast

And the addiction is immediate, it's just not glaringly obvious

Cigarettes don't relieve stress, physiologically it's impossible that it does such thing, it's all in your head

Enjoy ruining your life, another one bites the dust

I think you should switch to Marijuana instead of Cigs. I heard it can cure asthma.

    Just quit lol.

Its a huge waste of money, i'm sure your like nah i only buy a pack a month.

    Its gonna be 2+ soon.

My mother started when she was 18 she started with 1 pack a month sometimes even two months, these days she smokes a pack per day.

I mean thats like 5 euros a day on bullshit.

    30*5 = 150 euro's a month
    12*150 = 1800 euro's a year.

That's a vacation to spain right there.

I'm not saying you will eventually buy a pack a day i'm saying theres a chance you will.

All in all its a waste of money.

My folks smoke. I can't do it. I'm not really scared about the whole "addicted, cancer" thing. Nah. I just don't find it appealing, nor do I find it beneficial.

smoking isnt harmful, teenagers all do it and they seem pretty on-the-ball.

pwet there is nothing wrong with weed, its the people dealing in it that are dangerous or the ammount of growing crap they used on it to buff the THC ammount. real weed from warm country's like jamaica, growed outside dont even get u high cause it barely has THC.. it just tastes good. people easily put it in the catagory: hard dope but i think thats just wrong. they dont even know what theyr talking about cause they never tasted real outdoor weed theirselfs.

but even if u smoke buffed weed its still MUCH less harmfull then alcohol because: (copy pasting from here :P)
There has never been a documented human fatality from overdosing on tetrahydrocannabinol or cannabis.[15] Information about THC's toxicity is derived from animal studies. The toxicity depends on the route of administration and the laboratory animal. Absorption is limited by serum lipids, which can become saturated with THC, mitigating toxicity.[16] According to the Merck Index, 12th edition, THC has a LD50 (dose killing half of the research subjects) value of 1270 mg/kg (male rats) and 730 mg/kg (female rats) administered orally dissolved in sesame oil.[17] The LD50 value for rats by inhalation of THC is 42 mg/kg of body weight.[17] One estimate of THC's LD50 for humans indicates that about 1500 pounds (680 kilograms) of cannabis would have to be smoked within 14 minutes.[18] This estimate is supported by studies which indicate that the effective dose of THC is at least 1000 times lower than the estimated lethal dose (a "safety ratio" of 1000:1). This is much higher than alcohol (safety ratio of 10:1), cocaine (15:1), or heroin (6:1).[19]

About lung cancer, my mother has been smoking for 30+ years and she hasn't gotten any kind of lung cancer yet. She's perfectly fine, keeps her life in check, jogs, etc... I'm not sure if she quit smoking, I'll have to ask her later. I know the effect vary from person to person, too, I'm not just basing the fact that I will be perfectly fine off my mother or anybody else.
Well, it's safer, but inhaling the smoke from any plant is still plenty harmful to your lungs.

The exact amount of carcinogens in both is still pretty unknown, plus finding a legitimate report is a tough thing to do. However I know tobacco contains more carcinogens than weed does. If the weed has been tampered with it would have the potential to be more harmful then cigarettes. Molds, excessive fertalizer, laced with other drugs/shit you find under the sink could change the carcinogens levels drastically.

If you have to ask how harmful something is for you in the long run, chances are you are better off not doing it.

We already know there are harmful effects from smoking, especially in the long run. Knowing that there are consequences in partaking in that habit should be enough for you to decide if you want to deal with them later on in life.

This really ain't the best place to be making a decision about this. Try asking someone you know who smokes (like I do). I've never encountered a healthy person that said they are glad they started smoking anything though, young and old. Not once.
