The internet is too unreliable for this in the long run.

Many people still have a form of bandwith limit and this is going through that limit as well.
Than you get a 56kbps internet connection and farewell games till the meter is reset.

    1.5MBps/8=192kBps. 192kBps*3600= 675MB.

Now let's take you game during the weekdays 4 hours using this system and 10 in the weekends. (4weeks in a month)
    ((675MB*4)*20)+((675MB*10)*8)= 108000MB/1024= 105.4GB per month.

That's quite a bit for the SD version, don't you think?
The HD version takes 351.4GB per month.

I know alot of people that will use this that they'll get a ranting letter from their ISP, perhaps even a visit from the police to check if you didn't pirate alot.

If you have unlimited, by all means, go for it.
Otherwise when you're on a bandwith cap, STAY AWAY FROM IT.

I should update this but all my effort went into writing this lousy excuse.

Yah because I am just some "ignorant kid"

I have been on computers since the 1980s.

I can tell what will fail or not.

Onlive will never reach popularity among the PC gaming crowd.

Just like "The Phantom" console never reached popularity.

There is a reason why computer gaming is popular and Onlive leaves out the important things.

Also like mentioned before most countries are still far behind in bandwidth amount and speed.

you can rent, own, demo, they will also have movies available.. not sure where you heard that you can only "rent" but you need to do a little more research before posting.

and that will be another big + renting PC games.... something that wasn't possible in the past. goodbye 10gig games

since when could you see into the future? and you failed to explain how it would fail once again. so you been using a computer since 1980.. that makes you know what will fail and what will succeed??? you make me ROFL it's not even out yet.

so in your next post, lets hear what onlive has left out.. keep in mind it's not out yet and they can update it's features and fix up the hardware and latency issues (which i am sure there will be) in the future.

it means, no more installing 10 gigabyte games. which will save alot of space, also no more needing to upgrade a computer every 2 years or so.

there is a chance this onlive service will fail but there is also the chance it will succeed.. just look at steam.

i say give it a year after it's release to say if it will fail or not.

Yah what about modding which is one of the most important parts of computer gaming?

How about setting up your own dedicated servers?

Steam is different as it lets you still have control of the files and the ability to set up your own servers.

Onlive will most likely not succeed in any big way because it lacks the popular aspects of computer gaming and requires bandwidth which is not agreeable with a large part of the gaming population.

The Phantom tried the same thing as Onlive and never even made it out.

Yah and also I have had my newest computer for 3 years and I can still play just about every single game at max settings at 1680x1050 res.

I only need to lower the res to 1440x900 when I play Metro and Possibly Crysis.
And I only spent around 650-700 USD on my build

This service will fail for one reason... Lag.

You press a button and it sends information back to the server that you pressed the button and then performs the action. There is no way that this will be as fast as having the game running off your own computer.

When playing an FPS or any action game you need to rely on your controls. When you press a button you expect the action to happen right away, while doing this there will be latency. Any game that reads your controls serverside is bad. A free game, Lunia, did this for some time and it made the game terrible if any of you remember that.

i don't think they would release something this big that relies on a broadband connection, without testing the latency from the player to the server

and i don't think amd, ati, nvidia, eidos, epic games,thq,2dboy,gameloft,hidden path, codemasters, ubisoft, and ea . would partner with them to bring games out, if it was going to be a fail service..

they had beta testers to test the latency/lag issues for them. it's not like all of testers were 2 miles away from the servers... -.-"

use your brains.. the only real issue atm would be the bandwidth

I kinda don't you should be the one to tell the people in this thread to use their brains. Hypocrisy is very unkind.

i am using my brain, thank you very much.

do you honestly think they would release this service without working out it's kinks? i think latency is the least of the worries. and how they will handle the bandwidth should be the main concern.

then again i am 7 hours away from where they are located so i highly dought i will have any latency issues . if you think it will fail, simply don't use the service.

anyways why argue about it now, wait till the 17th...

wonder how many people said the internet would fail when it was first introduced...

i don't see the point of this, steam does a great job at digital sales this ones big sales pitch is "you don't download" well "woopdie doo" what if i want to download my games there mine

and no mods is going to suck if there's no downloads that means you cant go into said downloaded folder and add mods of your choice, if i want naked ladies and dudes and amazing super high res texture replacers on my morrowind or oblivion that's my choice its my game

i mean steam has demos and free weekend preview events, if i want to watch people play games i can go to xfire livestream's or ustream or justin.tv or wherever else or watch on youtube or watch some frag movie on many of those sites dedicated to gaming movies

this is a dumb idea i mean steam and d2d already got this market under control whats the point

not to mention steam has its own built in DRM (as to keep most companies from feeling like they should still use some draconian drm) that actually works and doesn't suck, has offline mode, plus they have huge sales all the time

i am perfectly happy with steam and im sure most other pc gamers are as well

It's not really a steal I just buy cheaper, but good quality parts.

That is what I spent on my computer back in 2007 (not counting a monitor) I could build one similar that would cost around 550 USD and possible cheaper if there is no need for windows 7 or you are a student who can get it for 30 USD instead of 100 USD.

If you use Newegg.com you can build a PC for just as cheap.

Also on topic, I already listed the reasons why this will fail.
I think most of the PC gamers would agree.
We don't like to have our choices taken away.
PC gaming is the best because of community, dedicated servers, and modding.
You take those away and it will fail.

I was under the impression that Onlive would not only have PC games but also console games? I might be wrong considering the fact that when they stated it would be only for the US I stopped paying attention .

Anyway this could really go either way. In the US most people have very fast connections which isn't the case in Europe but on the flip side there are bandwidth limits over there...and I'm pretty sure that in most EU countries there aren't any.

I'm hoping that it'll at least be somewhat successful. Obviously the more hard-core "I need ma mods" people aren't going to use it but then again not all games have worthwhile mods.

Also the fact that you can link it directly to your TV without too many problems is a plus in my book.

Although I wasn't really sure of something...if you buy a game do you still need to pay the monthly/yearly membership to play or is that only for games you don't own? (Not paying once you buy a game would make sense but I rarely take stuff for granted =P)

P.S. Yes I know you can link your PC to your TV but let's face it, I'm not gonna bother...
