Default Low Res +AA vs High res no AA

So I was browsing another forum and saw a thread about this.

One of the guys was trying to claim that higher resolution doesn't matter much and that a 720p game with 2x AA will look just as a good as if it were a 1080P game with no AA.

I disagreed with him and I was wondering what everyone's opinion on this.

At higher resolutions there is no need for AA anyway.

Please tell me you can see a difference in these screenshots.

I made them the same size since that is what they will look like on full screen.

Try viewing the pics at 1680x1050 res to get the exact size for full screen.

    Here is the 1280x720 one

So everything thesame besides AA and resolution?

I would go with the 1080P one.
Higher res eliminates AA to a certain degree and the texture models would look better as well.

I should update this but all my effort went into writing this lousy excuse.

Higher resolution of course, there's no substitute for the actual thing. You can't fake something that isn't there, that's what you're trying to create with low res + AA. AA is really just a touch up, an illusion, sort of like bloom to HD lighting. (Correct me if I'm wrong)

1080p looks FAR better than the 720.. Really I don't even see how anyone could even argue that.

If you cant see the difference you are blind. If the images havn't been changed at all by compression you can tell how blury and washed out the first image is, and this may be because of settings or the fact that you have to squish the images to fit the smaller screen size.

This also happens on oblivion. The actual graphics of the game get so washed out that I can't stand playing on lower resolutions. The sharpness of the image changes dramatically. It all depends on what the game is designed for as well.

I.E. If the game was designed for a 720 resolution than the higher resolution won't matter. If the game was designed for 1080 than the lower resolution won't look as good. AA is good on any resolution and I think any game without it looks crappier. I can't stand jaggies at all, and both images could use more AA.

higher res eliminates the need for AA sometimes but its still extremely noticeable at 1920x1080

anyways imo 720p 2x AA looks better then 1080p no aa

i would still take 1080p simply because of textures

also im talking about the rip effect on the outside of models that no aa has in games. if we are talking about just pure looking better texture wise then my choice is 1080p

I have never cared about anti-aliasing. It's like those guys who play SNES games on emulator and use the wacky graphical masks instead of enjoying it in its pixelly original goodness.

    So, definitely high-res, no-AA.
