    Default Inventory System

I'm currently working as an intern at a growing internet communications company doing IT work. My main job as an intern for now is to find a way to inventory all their electronics efficiently(Like a barcode system). We'd like to be able to assign the barcodes to each electronic device with history of a date and owner so we can easily look up who has what and/or how old their piece of tech is.

If anyone knows of a good system to do this, I'd love your help. We just want to be able to assign a barcode, plug in the information we need, and be able to look it up on a computer later efficiently so we know what we have at all times.

Thanks for the help if you can, I know this is a very strange request. I have some Ideas in mind, but if anyone was more knowledgable in this area, then it would be very helpful.

You'd need a database and probably an application to connect the database to the barcode reader.

I can't really help much on those two parts, so I hope you find someone that is able which database to use.

I should update this but all my effort went into writing this lousy excuse.

Go to the library and ask about their systems. You'll probably need to buy a few barcode scanners, barcode stickers, and maybe the license for the database system. Once you have that all set it should be fairly simple to set up your database and keep track of new equipment. It might be a good idea just to only do the newer items and let the old equipment phase out as it breaks because retrofitting takes forever to do.

The library system seems like a good plan. The problem with all of the systems is that they have too many features for companys(Like a grocery stores) that need to sell and transport the inventory, and not enough features for what we need(like being able to see which employee has what)

But those are good ideas for a start.3

What about asking a high school? The high schools and middle schools around here are starting to use bar codes. The way their system works sounds a lot like what you want.
