    Default Your thoughts on Trophies/Achievements?

I was looking up if there were any plans to have trophies in Final Fantasy XIV for the Playstation 3 and I ran into a couple of interesting opinions about the whole trophies/achievements thing. I guess my question is, why would someone dislike them so much that they wish they were removed altogether?

Personally, my opinion has always been indifferent to them as I was a PC gamer for the longest time (never really got into Steam or Games for Windows Live). Since I got my Playstation 3 though, I think I've grown a bit of a appreciation for them. I think it's exciting to try and get the more difficult ones (though I often fail to do so, as you can see), and I enjoy the tiny sense of accomplishment I get from unlocking a trophy without even realizing it.

Whether it's beating someone next to you in Street Fighter 4 or cooperating with someone next to you in LittleBigPlanet, getting some headshots in Call of Duty or beating Final Fantasy XIII on your own, the whole point of video games (other than fun) is accomplishment. Beating someones ***, beating a level or beating a game. Achievements and trophies do nothing but give a potentially linear game a little more depth and perhaps significantly more challenge, or gives you just a few more things to do in a game that already has a lot. I guess one could argue they're kind of pointless and don't really offer anything gameplay-wise (unlockables, new levels, new characters, etc), but that's like saying "why beat a game when all you get after it are the lousy credits, or get sent back to the main menu right away". It's about the journey, not the destination.

Anyways, anyone around here one of those "I wish they never existed and they make no sense" people? I'm genuinely curious to hear a well thought out argument against it.

Theyre just time sinks, it gives people things to do and a reason to take their mind off the game, if theres grind/etc. .. its also a good way to get bragging rights..

Onrpg is planning on implementing a trophy system.

    Just kidding.

    That'd be silly.

The only time I've ever hated achievements was when I played Ninja Gaiden 2. The evil bastard gave me an achievement for dying 100 times.

Achievements are pretty cool for killing time I guess. xD

One might say that video games are simply a time sink in life, yet we love them so. Something to think about?

(not something for you to think about in particular, just in general for everyone)

They don't add anything to gameplay = useless.

    Achievements vary between games.
The grindy ones are just boring, I like the ones that are a challenge and really give you the sense of satisfaction after achieving a task.
The Mile High Club took me just less than a hour to get (I failed at the hostage bit twice ) but I was like YEEEEAAAAAHHHHHH when it finally popped up.

Most of the Gears ones are a pile of shite though, 100k kills is just ridiculous same with getting to level 50.

They are great when done right is what I'm trying to say.

    This, more or less.

Forgive my boldness, but I'm guessing the sense of accomplishment in winning the achievements/trophies isn't a valid point towards their existence? Not to mention some of the entertainment value you may find in some of them.

Not trying to argue, just getting into your head a little.

One thing I liked about Mass Effect 1 was the achievements gave you bonuses.

Even if it was small, like +5% health, it added up and made it fun to go after.

    Do this. Do this now.

The amount of e-peen in here would be overwhelming.

Depends. If the achievements are somewhat casual like Beat Hazard then I do try to get em. But some hardcore achievements AND a lot of them like in CS:S....I don't bother. My bro plays it and he has gotten like 60+ achievements so far.
