    Why do you like it? Oh and it is a children's series -> So I doubt it will be dark enough for my taste.

    Giraffe by J.M. Ledgard. It's a more realistic novel with animal protagonists (Giraffes). It's absolutely heartbreaking and very beautifully written.

    My mom checked it out at a library for me to read but I never did.
