You put music on by syncing to your itunes library. This includes songs you have purchased from itunes, songs you have ripped from CDs, and songs you have illegally pirated.
You were prolly confused because you can't sync it with more than one library. Meaning, you get one computer to work with so you can't just fill up your iPod half way at home, then fill it up the rest of the way at a friends house.
Or, not easily anyway.
