I find that having the multiple skill trees to go down and different skills that are optional in the skill trees allows people to make tons of builds. I also find having a class advancement system and skill trees makes the game more enjoyable because of the multiple different ways to create a character and the way you can make tons of new characters and still have different paths to go down even if they are the same base class. I miss the old system as well and wish some of the newer games would implement it would make them so much more enjoyable

while there are pros and cons to each type of character system, the bottom line is that, the game needs to sell to the general public.

if the company releases new content/updates and maintains the game well, regardless of how the gameplay is set-up, there will be a core fanbase that will be dedicated to the game.

its part of MMORPG culture imo~

as for me, personally i don't mind the character system or the class advancement system. having played both types and liking both.

They even give "nicknames" instead of having classe names, which kinda annoys me and kills the purpose of having your own selfmade character.

Of course it doesn't stop most players to keep playing and that's why market will keep using that trend (as it's cheaper to produce).

Now we play a Evy or a Irene Claudel and no more your own mage or battle priest.

Then again both your examples are from room-based games, one even a 3D DotA.

In a mmo, and defently for the bigger mainstream game company's like blizzard, ncsoft and so on. They need to make a mmo customizable and make you feel like your a player, not a clone. hence why most have the stat changing, gear changing, and even able to change your body type, face, and clothing depending on what *APB was a great example for this*

I think if company's are using a set alone *clone* they need it so you still feel like a singler person, not a template of many other 1000s of players. Its possible to do so, maybe with a pre set stat, set looks, but as the game goes on, change how you look, how the toon acts, how its stats are done, and so on. So at the end game, you are your own person, with its own traits.

But i think Alot of f2p mmo's are doing the clone due to Cash restants, and just cant be botherd as they know people will play if their friends, or family are playing. and if the hypes good nuff, people wont care.

Tho i personaly love having my own guy/girl toon, make them look how i want, and their play style to how i like! Reasons i love DDO for its class systems, and also like mmo's like FF11 and ROM for the dual class systems, so you can really define what you are, and what you want to do.

Class advancements with different skill trees ftw~!
I like building my "own" classes, having stat points to distribute is an essential feature though

XD haha, tell me about it, stupid character selection/gender-locked games, wish they weren't so prominent, but I guess its easier (lazier) to make them XP

Characters are easily handled making less customization but more balance.

It's whatever the dev of the game feels like. I prefer either but some people I know hate the character system.

My problem with character based classes is that it detracts from the concept of these games. The whole point of the MMORPG was that you were whoever you wanted to be on some epic adventure. You make everyone into a select few characters and that is suddenly thrown out the window.

What is your view on this? Do you mind developers slowly phasing out class advancements? Or do you feel it is actually just pure design laziness on their part?
i love games with no classes, but i cant find any nowa days.

BTW ur blog is as entertaining as jerkin' it to a power ranger

You mean games where instead of classes you can train individual skills? Yeah. We sure are missing on those these days. Those are perhaps the ones closer to an actual RPG model.

I like my customization, especially since my first MMO was RO, and then WoW. Both of which have huge lots of customization. That said though, I'm not unwilling to play cookie cutter characters as long as there is a nice back story for me to enjoy.

I prefer having the ability to control leveling my abilities and stats, as well as customizing my character in the way I want to, rather than conforming to a template.

I also love (and dream about) insanely large class and skill trees.

I dont mind it. As long as there ARE customizations on top of the characters. Something like DFO is bearable. It has job advancements and 'streetfighter'-like characters.

But, If they all look the same... then no.

I do like seeing characters with different kinds of personalities. could be shown by the way they move/walk. or physical appearances .etcetc.

I always found a class tree to be the best thing of an mmorpg. Ragnarok's is an example of an awesome class system. Really wish new games had a class tree that indepth :x.

The oldschool system will always be the best. I find myself being more attached to my character when I actually take part in its build. It because unique, and soully based off my own playstyle. On the other side, I despise class advancement trees. Class trees are fine, but if I have to deviate to being one or the other I wont like it. For instance, being a warrior and suddenly being forced into the defense tank role, or the offensive zerker role, I don't want this, sometimes I like to blend the two. Sorta wierd of me I know.

I don't like the set characters. It really pulls me out of the game and makes it feel more like I'm playing a character instead of it being my persona.

There's nothing "RPG" about having characters instead of classes. I like my classes.

Prefer making my own character and picking the class I want. Like in Vindictus I would have liked to have a female with 2 swords instead of being stuck using Lann. Genderlocked classes are the worst. I don't see why they can't just have male and female versions of each character. Other than just being lazy or trying to save content for later.

the reason why vindictus is gender locked is the story follows those heros u will find out why later in the game and it aint the devs are lazy they made mabi and that game has loads of customization>_>

DoMO is possibly the only free MMO with a class system that is along the lines of something I enjoy. Besides that, the customization of FFXI works just about the same with slight limitation but more skill choices. FFXIV qualifies as the best system to me as you can actually access skills from other "classes" on any class. Though DDO has the D&D system that works for me(Though 20 Bard is the true way for my style) and Everquest 2 actually implements enhancement trees that cover nearly every angle(EQ2X with a melee based Warden).

I enjoy mixing my classes and skills as I please, always been a fan of the generalist from the Minstrel of Dragon Warrior/Quest to the Red Mage of Final Fantasy to Magus of Chrono Trigger and beyond. I don't mind having the best of all worlds, but I like being versatile enough that I can do what I please, and I like the mixture of melee and magic into a single character.
