When most "professional" journalists became professional teleprompter readers, that lack a mind of their own and know about as much about the world as any average teenager. The days of Walter Cronkite and other true broadcast journalists are well behind us.

political comedians have to work harder than newscasters these days, it stands to reason that they'd be better qualified.

besides which, they do a better job of getting people to pay attention to the news.

also, in America's current political climate, there are a lot of things you just can't say on the ordinary news. Comedians can get away with a lot.
