Default Bigpoint CEO claims SWTOR won’t be profitable

Found this on frontpage of digg.com

    http://www.swtorstrategies.com/2010/...r-wont-be.html

Bigpoint is one of the Biggest Publishers for F2P and Browser Games and CEO Heiko Hubertz recently stated that he believes that Star Wars – The Old Republic will never be profitable with it’s current financial concept.

“If you look in the traditional industry there are still a lot of big bets there,” said Hubertz, keynoting the London Games Conference this evening. “Still there are companies investing $20-40 million for a game. These companies have to be profitable after one or two months. They don’t have 12 months or even more. I think these companies are really in trouble in the future if a user can play online games for free.

“If you look at a game like Star Wars from EA and BioWare, they estimated a development budget of more than $100 million. This is an online game for many million of subscribers, so a big publisher does not understand that a subscription model is not the future.

“With micro-transactions and longer lifetime maybe I see a chance for this game but I don’t think that EA or BioWare will be profitable with this game. Ever.”

This is quiete a counterargument to Jack Emmer who said that SWTOR might be the only game that could generate enough revenue to exist in the world of subscription based games.

i dont think that this game will fail and for me the graphic is great. Think about
it..you thought that the WoW graphic sucks too (long time befor they released a beta). The engine from SWTOR is like the new generation from this graphic style because its for low specs too + it looks good on high specs. It has more details than the WoW ones and so on. In the end..its a good thing and no one
will cry about the graphic when the beta is out. Seriously..wanna bet?

It's not about the technology that's disappointing to a lot of people but rather it's the art style. Sith don't look menacing when they look like they've been done by the same people who remade Monkey Island. I liked Battlefront II's art style more.

It's also really bad that they're focusing so much on teasing about how they did full voice acting (which is a nice feature) and interactive storytelling but completely keep everyone in the dark about how the most integral gameplay mechanics work. They haven't clarified anything on their combat system and they keep releasing videos that feature underwhelming combat.

TBH, Bioware is beginning to really sink in my mind with their design. Dragon Age II looks terrible at the moment. Really really dumbed down from Dragon Age Origins. It's turned into a button masher. It looks more like Medieval Effect rather than Dragon Age. The choice system is laughable now with their little pictures.

let's get one thing straight here:
KOTOR was a hit or miss series.
one's story and characters kicked ***, but the small selection of feats and powers was kinda meh

two had awesome list of feats and powers but was lacking in likable characters and a good story(due to the game being rushed). Over al i'd say it's a good series if you enjoyed buldar's gate(which was made by bioware) in a 3-d world.

but you also have to take into account that after the old republic they released a little game called jade empire that was only 10 hours long(with sidequests) and was balls easy. i think jade empire really set the tone for how i see bioware now. they arn't some god company(that's reserved for black isle.) we shall see how TOR fairs, if it does poorly, oh well. if not good for them.

    also @kit
you mention FPS effect. that wasn't the first shooter bioware made. ever heard of a little game called MDK? if not play it, pretty damn good.

Spending 100million$$$ and they can't seem to make anything unique? To me it seems like a beefed up wow-starwars hybrid. Star wars is too big of a universe to simply restrict it to four basic classes.

As a onrpg journalist you should share your information on onrpg without having to promote your blog. That's all i have to say.
I'll stop arguing here as this is a thread about something completely different.

    Back on topic.

I believe the Bigpoint CEO should look at their own games, seeing that especially their f2ps and f2p services are utterly terrible.

Sticking shoddy freebie DLC packages for new copies of games and once those are used up you gotta pony up 10 bucks. (In Mass Effect 2's case it was the Cerberus Network which included a short mission with an NPC, a handful of weapon/armor packs and a tank while all the good DLCs must be paid for)
Yes iv heard about it and its a good idea.

I bought all DLC for Mass Effect 2 and DAO.

Erg I play bioware games cos they know how to hook me on a story. What's wrong with ME or ME2? Am i the only one that find Dragon age combat system tedious, it's a giant dungeon with lots and lots of monster to bash, then at the end 2 min of dialogue. And the emotionless character faces don't help. It's like if they didn't even bother to animate them.

Although i don't care at all aboot mmorpg stories.

By his logic, any subscription based mmo that spent over 20 mill on their development WILL fail. WoW anyone ??

No Im not saying this game will be as successful as WoW, but big name subscription MMOs DO have a chance.

Where did you play TOR, Fenik. I'm curious to know. I assume you were able to play it for more than 30 minutes to actually create a respectable opinion.

Many of your arguments or thoughts are just wrong mr.
    You are against...NDAs..? Uh...what?
Blizzard has ALWAYS lifted their NDAs almost immediately after a betas release. As far as I know TOR's NDA is still in effect, and has been in effect since the beginning of TORs alpha testing.

If EA/Bioware plans on making the "hiding" feature their biggest thing...they are going to have some MAJOR problems. There are very...VERY few differences between WoW and TOR, especially if you directly compare them side by side.

I'm confused how you think the combat is innovative in any way. As it looks just like standard, click and press hot key, combat.

I don't think the game will flop...but it certainly will NOT be a contender for 'top' MMO.
